M&J is seeking a fulltime certified Building Official for Building / Vertical Construction opportunities within our Construction Management Division. Positions are open for projects within Connecticut and Southern New England.
Location: Based in our Hamden Connecticut Office.

Responsibilities

This position is accountable for independently performing a full range of tasks in conducting plan reviews and inspections of facilities assuring proper application of the state building and firesafety codes adopted referenced standards the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and other applicable regulations. The Building Official will provide architects engineers other design professionals owners representatives and construction industry representatives with technical assistance in proper application of the code. This important role will entail:
Resolving problems in design construction alteration or renovation of buildings. Conducting field inspections of construction work in progress to assure conformity with code and other regulations.
Determining required code testing of engineered building systems and assistance with preparation guidelines.
Conducting technical onsite inspections and evaluations on complex code issues and advice.
Determining appropriateness of building materials and system components based on code interpretation.
Performing Plan Review for and evaluates building plans and specifications for code compliance including design materials construction methods accessibility energy conservation and lifesafety features.
Conducting site inspections and feasibility studies for location renovation or conversion of facilities.
Performing onsite inspection surveys and building assessments for a variety of facilities. Review of available documentation inspecting gathering of data and evaluation of building interior exterior site conditions building systems and lifesafety equipment based on condition and code compliance.
Writing of narrative reports and other documentation or correspondence as required.
Performing related duties as required.

Qualifications

This position requires considerable knowledge of the Connecticut State Building FireSafety and Fire Prevention Codes (ICC and NFPA based) and the pertinent related sections of the Connecticut General Statutes. Proper knowledge of the physical attributes within the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Knowledge skill and ability include:
Ability to properly interpret contract plans and CSI based specifications for largescale projects.
Knowledge of installation procedures for building trades work including building materials and equipment.
Ability to interpret the codes and apply building construction standards building plumbing mechanical electrical codes adopted national reference standards standard tests for construction materials and fire rating and applicable state and federal statutes.
Knowledge of basic engineering and architectural principles practices and methods of building design renovation construction building systems utilities and related site work.
Adequate knowledge of the effects of adverse weather (wind snow rain) and seismic events on buildings.
Considerable interpersonal skills. Ability to communicate with engineers and architects contractors trades personnel owners representatives and government officials.
Proper oral and written communication skills.
Ability to present concepts graphically.
Experience with Microsoft Office Suite.

Preferred Qualifications:

Five 5 years of experience with construction projects involving the major building trades (e.g. site structural architectural plumbing HVAC electrical).
Familiarity with CTDOT Form 819 1.20 and the CTDOT Construction Manual.

Special Requirements:
Must be willing to travel in lower New England.
A valid Motor Vehicle Operators license is required and shall be maintained.
Must be able to work during offhours and weekends when necessary.
Certification as an Assistant Building Official or Building Official or obtaining certification within six 6 months of employment.
Note: Building Official and Assistant Building Official certification requires a completion of ninety 90 hours of jobrelated continuing education every three 3 years in accordance with Section 29262(b) of the Connecticut General Statutes to maintain licensure / certification.

Physical Requirements:
May be exposed to some risk of injury or physical harm from construction site environments and some discomfort from yearround weather conditions. Inspection requires climbing and entering excavations walking on irregular surfaces use of a ladder and exposure to varying heights.
A routine ability to drive a motor vehicle to project sites and an ability to remain stationary for periods at a time.
