The Alaska Department of Fish and Game Division of Sport Fish is recruiting for a Fish and Wildlife Technician 3 located in Douglas!


What you will be doing:
This position is part of the Southeast Alaska Marine Sport Harvest Survey (Creel) Project team. Using electronic data collection tools the role involves interviewing returning sport anglers and gathering biological samples from salmon and groundfish. The data collected will help estimate the effort and harvest of sportcaught species providing essential insights for the management of Southeast Alaskas fisheries. Additionally this position may assist with hiring offer logistical support to Creel samplers edit and proof paperwork handle genetics samples and CWT heads compile harvest and sampling data and support area management staff with various local office tasks and duties.

This position supports the Department of Fish and Game Division of Sport Fishs core functions of fisheries management fisheries research and communication and outreach. Creel sampling positions collect baseline information that is essential for managing the sport fishery in a sustained manner as well as providing vital information to anglers about sport regulations management and species conservation. As the most visible and accessible representative of the Department of Fish and Game in Elfin Cove this is a public position that must convey a helpful source of knowledge about state management thus reflecting positively the image of the Department.

Housing will not be provided in Juneau/Douglas but it will be provided at any other Southeast sampling site where you are assigned during the season.

The working environment you can expect:
This position is based out of the Douglas AK office but will travel to various locations across Southeast Alaska including Petersburg Wrangell Ketchikan Craig Sitka and Juneau as needed. The role involves collecting data from returning sport anglers and sampling their catch at harbors and boat launches. The position requires the ability to work independently or as part of small teams. This position will require working outdoors often in inclement weather and while sampling on docks throughout SE Alaska. You must be able to lift 40 pounds without difficulty and carry bulky equipment while sampling.

  • Strong communication organizational and basic math skills
  • Attention to detail ensuring the collection of highquality data and biological samples
  • Ability to work independently with selfmotivation and minimal supervision
  • Familiarity with Alaska sport fisheries and associated regulations
  • Familiarity with and potentially the ability to identify the common species caught in Southeast Alaskas sport fisheries

Minimum Qualifications

High school graduation or the equivalent.
AND
Six months experience at the developmental level of fish and wildlife technician or aide. With the State of Alaska this experience is equivalent to Fish and Wildlife Technician 2.
OR
One year of technical laboratory and/or field experience involving fish or wildlife research management or habitat protection; as a commercial fisher guide or trapper; or a subsistence hunter or fisher.

Substitutions:
An additional six months of work experience involving fish wildlife outdoor manual labor or in a laboratory may substitute for the high school graduation or equivalent.
Bachelor of Science degree in fisheries wildlife or habitat protection may substitute for a maximum of two years of technical laboratory or field experience involving fish or wildlife research management or habitat protection.

Special Requirements:
Work may involve exposure to animals insects inclement weather low level flying travel by boat or skiff or contact with and chemicals. Housing may consist of bunkhouses vessels or wall tents. Positions are seasonal or temporary.

Special Note:
High school diploma equivalent means one of the following: 1 a GED (general educational development); 2 completion of any basic adult education course equivalent to 480 class hours 16 weeks at 30 course hours per week); 3 acceptance in full standing by an accredited college or university; or 4 highest grade of school completed plus an amount of paid or volunteer experience that totals 12 years.

Fields of study comparable to fisheries wildlife or habitat protection include aquaculture biology ichthyology microbiology ornithology and zoology.
