Job Description

JOB CLASS CODE: 7933

TITLE: BUS DRIVER TRAINER

JOB GOAL: To conduct ontheroad and classroom phases of bus driver training courses; plan implement and instruct safety programs for district bus drivers; to assure state laws and local board policies are met.

REPORTS TO: Transportation Coordinator

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. High School diploma or GED Certificate.
  2. Two years experience in the operation of a school bus.
  3. Valid Kentucky Commercial Drivers License and school bus certificate.
  4. Completion and maintenance of certification by State Department of Education School Bus Driver Instructor Course.
  5. Must meet the requirements of a criminal record check as specified by Kentucky State Law.
  6. Must meet health requirements as specified in district personnel policy.

CRITICAL SKILLS/EXPERTISE REQUIRED:

KNOWLEDGE OF:

  1. Safe driving practices and methods.
  2. Principles methods techniques and strategies for training of school bus drivers.
  3. Provisions of the Kentucky Motor Vehicle Code and laws applicable to the operation of vehicles in the transportation of students and in the training of school bus drivers.
  4. Principle methods and procedures related to a large pupil transportation system.
  5. Technical aspects of field of specialty.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

ABILITY TO:

  1. Conduct bus driver training and safety programs.
  2. Operate a school bus over designed routes.
  3. Maintain accurate records.
  4. Understand and follow oral and written directions.
  5. Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
  6. Observe legal and defensive driving practices.
  7. Attend meetings and remain current concerning rules regulations policies and laws.
  8. Possess certification with the division of Pupil Transportation.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Conduct driver training instruction in accordance with the curriculum developed by the Division of Pupil Transportation.
  2. Conduct the annual eight hour update as required by Kentucky Administrative Regulations.
  3. Train and assist new drivers concerning student behavior management problems and situations.
  4. Conduct school bus driver certificate renewal training programs; conduct safe driving and safe working methods and procedures training programs required
  5. Attend safety meetings and attend workshops to remain current concerning driving regulations and laws
  6. Assist supervisor as required.
  7. Acts in accordance with the bylaws and policies as set forth by the Owensboro Board of Education KRS and KAR and applicable Federal laws and regulations.
  8. Demonstrates loyalty and dedication to the purposes and goals of the Owensboro Public Schools.
  9. Performs related duties as may be assigned.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Typical outdoor environment and inside bus exposed to sounds and noise levels that could be distracting or uncomfortable. May be exposed to contaminants and diseases and infections carried by school children. Will be required to work indoors assisting with lunch room duties.
  • Exposed to vibration frequently exposed to fumes odors or airborne particles toxins or caustic chemicals.
  • Exposed to wet and/or humid conditions moving mechanical parts and outside weather conditions yearround.
  • Noise level is usually moderate to loud

EVALUATION:

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Boards policy on evaluation of classified personnel. Evaluation will be conducted by the Transportation Coordinator.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  1. Classified salary schedule
  2. Classified benefits package
  3. Hourly rate $20.43 $24.34 contingent on verified experience
  4. FLSA Classification: Nonexempt
  5. Hours per day: 4.5 / with additional hours as needed when training
  6. Days per year: 182
