Junior Hatchery Assistant

Classification: Part time seasonal

Salary: $24.00 $32.00

Location: Hanceville TNG Salmon Conservation Hatchery

Deadline: Until filled


The Tilhqotin National Government (TNG) is the official First Nations government serving the Tilhqotin Nation. TNG is located in Williams Lake British Columbia and serves six communities including Esdilagh Tideldel Yuneitin Tletinqox Xeni Gwetin and Tlesqox.


The TNG Fisheries Department implements a range of a projects and activities that aim to advance the shared goals of the Tilhqotin Nation in fish fisheries and fish habitat. The Fisheries department is looking to hire a junior hatchery assistant to support the operation of the smallscale TNG Salmon Conservation Hatchery located at Hanceville. The position starts ASAP and runs until June 2025 with opportunity to extend.


This is an exceptional opportunity to be exposed to a range of interesting fisheriesrelated projects and learn new skills. We are looking for candidates with a strong interest in fisheries and environmental management.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Daily checks of fish heath and hatchery operations
  • Assist with incubation and rearing of fish at the hatchery
  • Tasks associated with direct fish care (e.g. feeding monitoring)
  • Cleaning and maintaining fish tanks and equipment
  • Participate in maintenance of hatchery building equipment and grounds
  • Daily recording of data and information

Requirements:

  • Grade 12/GED equivalent and/or appropriate work experience
  • Valid Class 5 drivers license (clean Drivers Abstract will berequired)
  • Basic computer skills (proficiency with computer/tablet) for communications and data entry
  • Interest/willingness/ability to conduct repetitive light physical tasks (indoors and outdoors) associated with monitoring and maintenance under various weather conditions
  • Safety focused eager to learn good communication skills able to work with minimal supervision and as part of a team
  • Living within 1hour drive of Hanceville considered an asset

Working Conditions:

  • Travel will be required
  • 34 halfday 4hour) shifts MonFri typically between 830430pm with options for weekend shifts
  • Potential option for oncall shifts evenings and weekends (available to receive alarm notifications offsite)
  • Work will take place indoors (hatchery facilities onsite office) and outdoors (facility and property maintenance)
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team
  • Manual dexterity required to use desktop computer and peripherals
  • Overtime as required
  • Lifting or moving up to 25lbs may be required
