RESIDENCE DIRECTOR
VSC UP PAT Bargaining Unit Grade 10

BASIC FUNCTION
To direct and coordinate the operation of one or more campus residence halls. Serve in oncall duty rotation. Administer and coordinate residence life programs for students in that complex.
This is a livein position.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Manage residence hall operations including: room and building access; safety health and maintenance concerns; room changes; coordination of openings and closings.
- Conduct workshops training and/or information sessions.
- Design organize and implement efforts to enhance dimensions of Student Life. Provide general assistance to departmental progress and efforts. Participation in an oncall duty rotation.
- Interact with both internal college groups and external groups and agencies. Serve as a liaison to Facilities Public Safety Conference and Events Academic Affairs and other campus departments.
- Manage hall program account. Collect edit & disseminate information. Create and distribute publications as appropriate.
- Enforce college policies. Adjudicate infractions of college policies.
- Assist in program planning and development for residential students.
- Supervise student staff including selection training and evaluation.
- Interpret and enforce a wide variety of residence life policies and procedures governing student behavior.
- Informally investigate assess and determine appropriate methods of resolving various interpersonal and community problems in the residence halls such as conflicts between roommates or floormates and vandalism.
- Advise and counsel individual students or groups on a wide range of matters referring to various on or offcampus resources as appropriate.
- With support and approval from the Assistant Director participate in location or VTSUwide committees or task forces.
- A percentage of this position will be dedicated to university work outside of residence life. Other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISON RECEIVED
General supervision is received from the Assistant Director of Residence Life.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Administrative and functional supervision of student resident advisors.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelors degree in appropriate discipline with masters desirable plus previous residence hall staff experience preferred or a combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills are acquired.
- Ability to organize and coordinate various operational and support activities associated with residence life and student services. Knowledge of college students and student development theories.
- Ability to supervise and review the work of subordinates understand the problems that confront college students exercise judgment and discretion in applying and interpreting college policies and relate well to fellow employees and members of the college community.
- Exhibit outstanding verbal and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to train others. Word processing required desktop publishing preferred.
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS & ABILITIES
Knowledge:
- Understanding of the educational goals and objectives of Vermont State Universityincluding attention to accessibility and diversity equity and inclusion.
- Understanding of the psychological and cultural characteristics of economically and educationally disadvantaged students particularly in a rural setting.
- Awareness of developmental holistic and proactive approaches to student success.
- Some experience in policy development and enforcement.
- Experience and knowledge of ADA compliance and ensuring accessibility for all students.
Skills:
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Able to meet students where they are and ensure they feel listened to and they are comfortable working with advisor to navigate challenges and concerns as they come up.
- Strong organizational and problemsolving skills.
- Experience with (or ability to learn) technologies such as Aviso Colleague SelfService Slate Microsoft products and Perceptive Content.
- Proven record of accountability and followthrough with the ability to meet deadlines.

- Ability to work effectively with a wide range of individuals within the University and capacity to work as part of a team to collaborate and choose student success.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with college personnel as well as families/guardians and external resources in carrying out the various coordination liaison and advocacy aspects of the job.
- Ability to work some weekends and evenings to provide student support outside of normal business hours.
