Department Summary
The School of Architecture & Environment (SAE) is part of the College of Design at the University of Oregon an Association of American Universities member and tierone research institution in the Pacific Northwest that is ranked highest research activity by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. The School of Architecture & Environment offers doctoral degree programs in architecture and landscape architecture graduate degrees in historic preservation fully accredited graduate and undergraduate professional degrees in architecture interior architecture and landscape architecture and concurrent graduate degree programs.
The School of Architecture & Environment main campus and the architecture landscape architecture and interior architecture departments are in Eugene Oregon. The Department of Architecture Portland Program is located in Portland Oregon. Both Portland and Eugene are bikefriendly and familyfriendly cities with ambitious goals for carbon emissions reduction and for community well being. The University of Oregon has an active Native American Student Union centered at the Many Nations Longhouse. The UO has Black Studies Latinx Studies and Disability Studies minors. The UO Lyllye ReynoldsParker Black Cultural Center is a nucleus for Black students and faculty on campus. Position Summary
The University of Oregon in Eugene and Portland Oregon invites applications for Visiting Faculty Fellowships in Design for Spatial Justice at the rank of assistant associate or full professor in the areas of architecture landscape architecture and interior architecture in the School of Architecture & Environment in the College of Design. The School of Architecture & Environment will award up to three faculty fellowships in design/researchinformed teaching for durations of one to two years. Each fellow with a fulltime appointment will be expected to teach two courses per quarter (six courses per year). As part of this course load fellows will be expected to teach design studio at the introductory intermediate and/or advanced level. Fellows will also be expected to contribute to scholarship service and public programming in support of the Design for Spatial Justice Initiative. For fellows with extensive prior teaching experience there may be opportunities to engage in studio cocoordination or curricular development. Landscape Architecture candidates will be involved in teaching and related activities supporting the Fuller Field School.
The School of Architecture & Environment at the University of Oregon acknowledges that professional schools of design and design pedagogy in North America have historically disproportionately excluded cultural perspectives outside of European and colonial traditions. The School of Architecture & Environment seeks to participate in remedying these exclusions by recruiting visiting faculty who will use teaching to expand their understanding of environmental social and spatial justice in design who will engage communities within and outside of the institution in their research and teaching and whose scholarship is enriched by their lived experience.
We are dedicated to strengthening our shared capacity to take intellectual risks and to advance knowledge. We particularly encourage applications from candidates who are interested in teaching on questions in spatial justice at the intersections of gender race ethnicity indigenousness disability sexuality and economic inequality and who are interested in teaching innovation design/research methods with a focus on architectural design studio. Studio methods might include but are not limited to traditional modes of scholarship design design research and creative practice; emerging technologies design media and fabrication; design and design/build; and community engagement social practice or critical spatial practice. Faculty fellows teaching will engage both graduate and undergraduate student populations supporting curricular objectives in core required courses while also developing elective seminars and/or options studios in the vertical or advanced sequence. Depending on interest and curricular need design studios subject area courses and seminar courses could be in one or more of any of the following areas: interior environments accessibility media design processes architectural technology cultural heritage and heritage conservation inclusive urbanism biocultural restoration traditional ecological knowledge feminist spatial practice design computation integrated design ecological justice climate change resilience habitats/housing humancentered design urbanism and/or land use and materials and methods.

6 years of teaching experience post terminal degree OR

Professor (Visiting):
A terminal degree in field of interest or related discipline
12 years of teaching experience post terminal degree OR
Same rank held at another university
Professional Competencies
Ability to communicate complex ideas effectively and facilitate student learning.
Ability to communicate how issues of justice and equity impact theoretical approaches to relevant disciplines and professional practice.
Ability to conduct independent highquality scholarship or creative practice.
Preferred Qualifications
Terminal degree in Interior Architecture Landscape Architecture or Architecture.
Excellent record of scholarly creative or other professional accomplishments in one of these fields.
