Job Description Summary:

The Lead Certified Nurse Midwife is a vital member of the leadership team working closely with Practice Leadership and reporting directly to the Senior Practice Leader Womens Services to ensure smooth operations and highquality patient care while also playing a dynamic role in the Marin community by providing both inpatient and outpatient clinical care offering excellent continuity of care to privately insured and publicly insured patients. The role requires a highly skilled Certified Nurse Midwife who can efficiently and independently run outpatient OB and GYN clinical sessions and who can assist in Csections and attend to the obstetrical needs of a highly varied patient population. The Certified Nurse Midwife will provide inpatient care to patients at Marin General Hospital a varied number of days per week as needed nights weekends and some holiday shifts included. The Certified Nurse Midwife may also perform 13 clinical sessions in the outpatient setting (either at MHMN or the Marin Community Clinics) a week as needed. The Certified Nurse Midwife may be asked to complete administrative tasks for MHMN and sit on relevant hospital committees as the OB representative.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

Leadership and Operations:

  • The Lead CNM manages the schedule and Midwife assignments and adjusts the utilization of staff as needed to ensure appropriate coverage.
  • The Lead CNM is responsible for approving the PTO and timecards for the medical assistant staff ensuring accurate reporting of time and attendance.
  • The Lead CNM will actively participate in the employee hiring review and disciplinary process for medical assisting staff. Feedback will be given to the providers and Practice Leader as needed.
  • Collaborates with other members of the health care team to develop and manage care and followup plans.
  • Provides rounding and medical handoff to the new clinical team each day when performing inpatient care.
  • May be assigned to participate in hospital committees as needed.

Clinical Care:

  • In collaboration with Hospitalists provides appropriate care within the scope of midwifery protocols to all OB patients in MarinHealth Medical Center.
  • Provides prenatal care labor management and postpartum care in accordance with standardized procedures and protocols in consultation with a physician.
  • Takes patients medical social and obstetric history; performs physical vaginal breast clinical pelvimetry and general health status OB and GYN exams; orders and/or performs approved laboratory and diagnostic exams; consults with and/or refers complications to a physician.
  • Performs limited sonography including firsttrimester dating and viability assessment thirdtrimester AFIs and fetal position confirmation.
  • Independently manages and delivers lowrisk patients; comanages highrisk women when appropriate and manages complications and emergencies until a physician arrives.
  • Performs diagnostic and therapeutic procedures relevant to pregnancy labor delivery and postpartum care.
  • Recognizes emergent abnormal and unsatisfactory obstetric and neonatal conditions and initiates appropriate measures.
  • Initiates and carries out midwifery and medical interventions such as amniotomy IUPC insertion fetal scalp electrode application catheterization IV fluid administration placement of cervical ripening balloon episiotomy anesthesia and medications.
  • Assists physicians with operative deliveries as required; successfully completes Csection surgical assist certification per hospital requirements.
  • Performs initial assessment of newborn status and begins resuscitation efforts if necessary.
  • Manages postpartum care; writes postpartum orders as indicated and provides guidance assistance and referrals to community medical and social agencies and resources.

Education and Training:

  • Provides telephone triage and consultation to patients; participates in prenatal and postpartum patient education.
  • Mentors and teaches medical and midwifery students.
  • Training: The Lead CNM is wellversed in the practice and is able to train and teach new skills to new or less experienced midwives. This includes new and annual competency signoffs in collaboration with the Clinical Operations Team.

Technology and Documentation:

  • Has strong acumen with computers and technology learns new software well and is considered an assisting clinicians in better utilizing APeX.
  • The Lead CNM has a strong acumen with computers and technology and learns new software well. And considered an APeX super user and be able to assist clinicians in betterutilizing APeX.
  • Prepares inputs and maintains organized detailed and accurate medical records.

Other Duties:

  • Attends inpatient and outpatient CNM meetings.
  • Attends clinic site staff meetings.
  • Perform all other duties as required or assigned.

Additional Requirements:

  • This position may require working in multiple locations.

Qualifications:

Education:

  • Masters prepared graduate of an accredited school of nursing or public health (MSN MPH) required and a midwifery program approved by the American College of Nurse Midwives (ACNM).

License & Certifications:

  • Must have a current California RN and Certified Nurse Midwife license and be certified by the ACNM (or eligible).
  • CA CNM Furnishing License required
  • Current BLS or ACLS certification from American Heart Association required
  • Surgical First Assist training certification for CSection or equivalent preferred. First Trimester and Third Trimester Sonography training is highly desired.
  • Must hold an active and transferable DEA license to California as required by the clinical specialty
