The Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) is seeking a motivated and capable individual to join the Southeast Alaska Team within the Division of Spill Prevention and Response Prevention Preparedness and Response (PPR) Program as an Environmental Program Specialist 1 2 or 3.

This multilevel recruitment presents a unique opportunity for growth and development. If youre not initially hired at the EPS 3 level you may promote into it over time based on your qualifications performance and time in service. Whether youre early in your career or bring years of experience this role offers the chance to sharpen your skills and take on increasing responsibility.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Spill Response Coordinate and oversee the cleanup of oil and hazardous substance releases to land air or water.
  • Contingency Planning Review and approve Oil Discharge Prevention and Contingency Plans submitted by regulated entities.
  • Compliance Inspection Conduct facility inspections and participate in spill response exercises to verify compliance with environmental regulations.
  • Incident Management Respond to complex spills using the FEMA Incident Command System framework.
  • Database Management Maintain and use internal databases to track plan reviews approvals compliance status and incident data.

The working environment you can expect:

This position is in DECs Juneau Office and is primarily officebased with occasional fieldwork during the normal workday. You can also expect some scheduled travel for facility inspections spill response exercise and training.

Unplanned emergency responses may sometimes require work outside of regular business hours including nights weekends or holidays. In rare cases you may be asked to assist with spill response efforts in other regions for up to two weeks. While afterhours work is part of the job its infrequent and we make every effort to accommodate personal schedules. Preapproved time off is always honored.

The role also includes periodic afterhours duty (approx. 24 weeks per year) to monitor the DEC afterhours spill reporting line. During these times youll receive standby pay along with compensation for any hours worked.

We are looking for a candidate that has experience in the following areas:

  • 40 Hour HAZWOPER training (OSHA) (can be obtained after hire)
  • 8Hour HAZWOPER Annual Refresher (OSHA)
  • Respirator fit testing (OSHAAnnual) (can be obtained after hire)

FLEXIBLY STAFFED
This position is flexibly staffed. The level of the job offer will be based on the selected candidates credibly possessed and proven competencies. If hired at the lower level you will be promoted to the higher level after completing the training plan and demonstrating competency in the work.
