Job Description

Job Title: Specialist System Safety Engineer

Job Code: 22902

Job Location: Rochester NY

Job Description: System Safety Engineer supporting various programs within Space and Airborne Systems. This position is to provide engineering support services for a variety of technical problems of moderate scope and complexity associated with the design assembly and test of highly complex optical sensing spaceflight hardware. Interacts with other engineering groups to define document analyze perform and interpret program system safety requirements for a variety of spacebound systems.

Essential Functions:

  • Perform hazard analysis hazard tracking and safety risk assessment tasks.
  • Generate System Safety Program Plans and Safety Assessment Reports.
  • Proactively drive system safety initiatives and leads implementations of compliance with program specific system safety plans and best practices.
  • Present system safety risk assessment at customer design review meetings.
  • Consult with other engineering staff to evaluate interfaces between hardware software and operational performance requirements of the overall system.
  • Strong oral/written communication as well as customer interface skills.
  • Able to provide work estimates schedule inputs and metric data to project management.
  • Work closely with Government customers to ensure that the System Safety requirements are defined and implemented in a way that will allow for the verification and validation of the system.
  • Partners with quality engineering mission assurance and specialty engineering to resolve test failures.
  • Experience in any or some of the following areas is desired:
    • Calibration and load testing of support hardware
    • Familiar with crane operations and proper rigging techniques
    • Familiar with MILSTD882E System Safety Program Requirements
    • Knowledge of standard AFSPCMAN 91710
    • Understand quantitative and qualitative safety risk assessments
    • Familiarity with RCCA activities
    • Familiarity with Nationally Recognized Test Laboratory (NRTL) testing and certification requirements
    • Experience with OSHA standards and applications

Qualifications:

  • Bachelors Degree and minimum 4 years of prior relevant experience. Graduate Degree and a minimum of 2 years of prior related experience. In lieu of a degree minimum of 8 years of prior related experience.
  • Willing to travel to customer sites and other L3Harris locations if required.

Preferred Additional Skills:

  • Have or the ability to obtain SSBI with Polygraph
  • Experience in an Electrical/Mechanical/Optical discipline in the Aerospace or Defense industry
  • Experience working in a cleanroom with ESD and contamination sensitive flight hardware
  • Able to support multiple projects in various stages of readiness.
  • Willing and able to work in a cleanroom environment up to and including full cleanroom suit.
  • Monitors hardware moves lifts critical assembly and test operations on the factory floor. This often requires extended periods of time standing and walking in the manufacturing and integration areas of the facility.
  • Willing to work overtime shift work (nights) or extended shifts weekends and holidays as needed.
  • Strong communicator written and verbal communication a must within and outside of function.
  • Ability to develop and execute calibration procedures/reports document findings and effectively communicate results.
  • Able to work in team environments with multiple other disciplines.

In compliance with pay transparency requirements the salary range for this role in Colorado is $7900 $146500. This is not a guarantee of compensation or salary as final offer amount may vary based on factors including but not limited to experience and geographic location.
