Job Description

Student Health and WellBeing (SHWB) Mental Health Services at Johns Hopkins University seeks an energetic organized and motivated Senior Mental Health Services Clinician Initial Consultation Team Lead to work in a dynamic and fastpaced environment focused on delivering innovative mental healthcare and supporting the wellbeing of a diverse community of learners. The Senior Mental Health Services Clinician Initial Consultation Team Lead will provide direct clinical services and supervise up to three clinicians conducting triage and referrals through the Initial Consultation process which serves as the entry point to care at Mental Health Services. Initial consultations are 25minute appointments generally conducted via Zoom that focus on exploring a clients presenting concerns performing a brief assessment of key mental and behavioral health indicators and developing individualized treatment recommendations in collaboration with the client to direct them to the most appropriate service(s) within the MHS portfolio or to more specialized care in the community.


The Initial Consultation Team Lead will be a warm and welcoming first point of contact for new clients and will possess highlevel skills in brief assessment and triage. This position requires a deep understanding of the range of services that MHS provides as well as a consistent and collaborative approach to treatment recommendations to support smooth clinical service delivery operations and ensure that clients are referred to the appropriate level of care. This positions clinical responsibilities will focus on triage and brief assessment and do not involve an ongoing caseload. However it may engage in singlesession therapy modalities (e.g. MHS existing Single Session Consultation model) and brief followup visits to bridge clients to other care options.


All MHS clinicians work collaboratively with psychiatry case management occupational therapy primary care and health promotion staff to provide care that emphasizes holistic wellness and mental wellbeing leveraging students resilience and other key skills.


Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  • The direct clinical service and supervisory responsibilities of this position will primarily be conducted via telehealth and Zoom with some inperson presence required for key staff meetings and department and division events.
  • MHS operates in three licensure jurisdictions and independent licensure is required in Maryland Virginia and Washington D.C. MHS reimburses costs associated with maintaining licensure in required jurisdictions.
  • Percentages of duties and responsibilities are provided as a general guideline and may vary depending on the time of year the needs of the clinical service and program coordination responsibilities.


Initial Consultation Service Oversight 1020

  • Manages the Initial Consultation service line including monitoring utilization and collaborating closely with clinical services leadership to ensure sufficient resource allocation to meet clinical demand.
  • Maintains awareness of MHS resourcing on a weektoweek basis to inform clinical dispositions and ensure appropriate recommendations align with available service capacity.
  • Leads a weekly consultation group for the initial consultation team and other clinicians who provide brief assessments.
  • Closely monitors client satisfaction surveys following initial consultation visits to identify and implement process improvements.
  • Provides professional development training and seminars to staff with a particular focus on brief assessments diagnostics and treatment planning.
  • Remains abreast of current literature and research on student behavioral health and evidencebased intervention strategies with a particular focus on triage brief assessments and singlesession therapeutic interventions.


Supervision and Leadership Development 1520

  • Supervises 13 clinical staff and/or psychology doctoral interns through goal setting periodic documentation review performance evaluations and accountability management.
  • Provides clinical supervision to ensure supervisees deliver highquality mental health services and practice within MHS guidelines; Intern supervision includes reviewing tapes leading didactic seminars and participating in training program activities.
  • Participates in recruitment hiring and training processes for clinical staff and interns.
  • Contributes to staff development engagement and teambuilding activities and actively participates in MHSwide events.


Direct Clinical Service 6075 depending on time of year and clinical demand)

  • Creates a warm and welcoming clinical environment where clients feel supported and respected as they pursue their personal academic and professional goals.
  • Provides multiculturally informed triage brief assessments and risk assessments to identify mental health disorders and support needs accurately.
  • Develop individualized recommendations that consider the clients internal and external resources acuity motivation for treatment and clinical needs.
  • Develops and maintains an indepth understanding of MHSs mission scope of services purpose and utility of IC.
  • Utilizes clinical acumen to match client support needs with the appropriate service within MHS range of options and employs motivational interviewing skills to build client engagement in treatment recommendations.
  • Develops and maintains a deep understanding of campus and community resources across the university to facilitate connections with supportive resources.
  • Collaborates with providers within SHWB as an interdisciplinary treatment team including therapists psychiatric providers primary care clinicians case management health coaches and disability services staff.
  • In collaboration with the MHS Case Management team provides clinical case management to facilitate connections to appropriate resources and ensure clients receive necessary care.
  • Consult as appropriate with community providers to facilitate continuity of care.


Special Knowledge Skills or Abilities

  • Specialized training or experience with triage brief assessments crisis intervention and singlesession therapeutic interventions.
  • Demonstrated a high level of proficiency in accurately assessing and identifying mental health disorders and support needs as well as developing individualized treatment plans.
  • Specialized training or experience working with one or more populations that have been historically underrepresented in the utilization of traditional mental healthcare.
  • Clinical experience with concerns prevalent within the student and learner population is strongly preferred (e.g. identity development trauma anxiety mood disorders disordered eating cooccurring substance use disorders sleep disorders and ADHD).
  • Bilingual proficiency is highly desirable.


Additional Information (Working Conditions)

  • Schedule:

  • This is a 37.5hour/week position. One evening clinic 6 or 7 pm) per week may be required based on programmatic needs; additional flexible scheduling may be possible.
  • This position requires occasional evening and weekend work dependent on the programmatic needs of the University and for activities during the academic year (e.g. orientation special events etc..
  • This position is 45 days/week; onsite presence will be required during the initial onboarding period and for key staff meetings and divisional events.
  • This is a 12month yearround position.
  • This position is designated as a Required Attendance Employee designated as vital to the operation of a workgroup so may be required to work during a university closure in response to operational needs.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Masters Degree in Counseling Psychology or Social Work from an accredited institution.
  • A minimum of 5 years of postgraduate clinical experience.
  • Minimum of 1 year of clinical supervisory experience.
  • Licensed as a mental health provider in the required jurisdiction(s) noted in the job description (psychologist LMFT LCPC LCSWC) or licenseeligible (licensed as a mental health provider in another jurisdiction must obtain licensure in required jurisdiction(s) within 6 months of hire).
  • Substitution/Equivalency: A doctoral degree (Ph.D. Psy.D. DSW or equivalent) in a relevant clinical discipline from an accredited program along with completion of an accredited internship. If eligibility is based on a doctoral degree a minimum of three years of postgraduate experience and two or more years of licensure as a psychologist or boardapproved status as a social worker or professional counselor is required to meet the minimum qualifications.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Doctoral Degree (e.g. DSW Ph.D. Psy.D. or a relevant terminal degree) from an accredited program.
  • Experience with APAapproved doctoral training programs as a clinical supervisor and familiarity with the compliance requirements for accreditation of APAapproved internships in health service psychology.
  • Clinical experience in a university setting is strongly preferred.
