About the Position:
The Police Dispatch Supervisor oversees assigns and participates in dispatching Police and other City personnel. This role includes monitoring supervising and ensuring work quality and compliance with established policies and procedures. This positionwill require working a varied work shift that includes evenings weekends and holidays.


The Ideal Candidate:
  • Supervisory Skills:Ability to plan schedule supervise and evaluate the work of assigned staff. Proficiency in performance evaluation coaching and taking disciplinary actions.
  • Communication and Coordination:Expertise in monitoring and overseeing communications between callers dispatchers and police units. Strong skills in resolving complaints and assisting with complex or nonroutine calls.
  • Technology Proficiency:Knowledge of dispatch equipment including computeraided dispatch (CAD) systems automated telephone systems and 800 MHz radio systems.
  • Geographic Knowledge:Familiarity with the geography of the City including the location of streets specific buildings trouble areas and hazards.
  • Administrative Skills:Knowledge in managing payroll scheduling and related administrative details for dispatch staff.

What Youll Be Doing Here

  • Incumbents are responsible for overseeing all aspects of the Police Departments emergency and nonemergency telephone and radio communications operations on an assigned shift.
  • Plans schedules supervises and evaluates the work of assigned staff; develops implements and monitors work plans to achieve assigned goals and objectives; contributes to the development and monitoring of performance against the annual Communications budget.
  • Evaluates the performance of assigned staff; regularly monitors performance provides coaching for improvement and development recommends compensation and takes disciplinary action up to and including termination to address performance deficiencies.
  • Monitors assesses and oversees communications between callers dispatchers and police units to ensure accurate and efficient relay of information; checks the status of police units to ensure availability for case assignment.
  • Investigates and resolves complaints regarding subordinate performance and service levels; assists and supports dispatchers with the most complex or nonroutine calls.
  • Reviews new technology for use in the Police Communications Center; identifies problems with computer hardware and helps specify the parameters of new systems; coordinates the implementation of computer telecommunications and radio technology.
  • Receives 911 and nonemergency calls; provides information routes calls and enters information into the police computeraided dispatch (CAD) system; evaluates prioritizes and sequences incoming information and determines the number and type of units to send to an incident; dispatches police personnel and equipment to incidents according to established procedures; maintains radio contact with police units on assignments and notifies other departments of needed support services.
Knowledge of and Skills in:
  • Federal state and local laws regulations and court decisions applicable to assigned areas of responsibility.
  • Techniques procedures and terminology used in the operation of a public safety communications center including telephone and radio communication.
  • Department nomenclature and designations for police units available for dispatch and all relevant verbal or electronic dispatch codes.
  • Principles and practices of effective supervision to manage and lead a team effectively.
  • City human resources policies and procedures and labor contract provisions to ensure compliance and proper management of personnel.
  • Criminal and vehicle statutes and ordinances relating to communications support for law enforcement and law enforcement procedures and practices.
  • Organizing prioritizing and directing the operation of the police communication center.
  • Analyzing situations accurately and executing the correct dispatch calls under both emergency and nonemergency circumstances.
  • Documenting facts and circumstances accurately thoroughly and clearly under pressure of multiple emergency call situations.
  • Working rapidly under stress and exercising good judgment in emergency situations.
  • Effectively operating telephone twoway voice radio console computer terminal and other related telephone equipment or systems in the communications center.
  • Eliciting information to assess explain and understand situations from callers.

What You Need to Qualify

High School diploma or G.E.D.;

AND

At least three 3 years of progressively responsible public safety dispatch communications experience at least one 1 of which was in a lead capacity; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment:
Employees work in a communications dispatch center and the noise level is generally loud except during periods of low dispatch activity. High activity periods escalated calls from difficult individuals and intense response situations can create highly stressful working conditions. While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to sit for prolonged periods; talk and hear both in person and by telephone/radio; use hands repetitively to manipulate handle and feel computers and standard business equipment; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to stand and walk and may be required to lift and carry supplies and materials weighing up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus. Hearing abilities required by this job include the ability to hear in the normal audio range by telephone/radio and to differentiate operating equipment sounds.
