Job Summary:

Under the direction and supervision of the Nurse Manager/Clinic Manager or Administrator or MA Supervisor the Medical Assistant (MA) will provide assistance to the clinician midlevel clinician clinic nurse(s) and patients. The MA provides basic clinical procedures to nonacutely ill patients assists in maintaining supplies provide quality patient care ensure safe and clean patient care area and perform other clinical duties and procedures prior to the clinicians visit with the patient while assuring positive care outcomes.

Supervisory Responsibilities: None

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

Clinical Functions

  • Responsible for knowing the Medical Assistant scope of practice
  • Prepare charts and obtain consents
  • Receive patients take and record chief complaints and prepare patient for examination; record blood pressure pulse respirations pulse oximetry height and weight
  • Prepare patients for examinations or procedures including positioning draping shaving and disinfecting treatment sites
  • Explain procedures to patients as requested by clinic personnel
  • Collect specimens take EKGs and collect blood samples as requested by clinic personnel
  • Assist the physician with examination treatments minor surgery dressing changes and splinting
  • Assist the provider in the collection of specimens such as pap smears and throat cultures
  • Administer medications orally topically vaginally rectally subcutaneously intramuscularly and intradermally
  • Prepare and replenish supplies in the treatment room and exam rooms
  • Maintain exam rooms in an orderly and constant state of readiness for incoming patients
  • Perform simple laboratory procedures such as blood sugars and urine dips
  • Sterilize instruments and maintain diagnostic and therapeutic equipment
  • Dispose of contaminated disposable and outdated items per protocol
  • Perform necessary vision screening and operate the oximeter audiometer nebulizer and spirometer as directed
  • Demonstrate willingness to assist coworkers whenever needed
  • Maintain good working relationships with all clinic personnel
  • Review patient record forms for accuracy and completion
  • Attend all staff meetings and health fairs
  • Observe DAP Health policies and procedures
  • Provide compassionate quality care to the patients of DAP Health within the scope of practice outlined by state or federal law
  • Perform other duties as needed.

Training Functions

  • Develop and Implement Training Programs:
    • Create comprehensive training programs that cover all aspects of the medical assistant role including clinical procedures administrative tasks and patient interaction
    • Ensure training materials are up to date with the latest medical guidelines and protocols
    • Encourage continuous learning and professional development through access to relevant courses and certifications
    • Develop and maintain a library of training materials including manuals videos and online resources
  • Conduct Orientation Sessions:
    • Conduct initial orientation sessions for new medical assistants to familiarize them with the clinics policies procedures and culture
    • Provide an overview of the clinics electronic health record (EHR) system and other essential tools
  • Deliver OntheJob Training:
    • Pair new medical assistants with experienced staff for handson training
    • Demonstrate clinical procedures and supervise new hires as they practice these skills
    • Provide realtime feedback and guidance to ensure proper technique and adherence to protocols
  • Conduct Performance Evaluations:
    • Monitor and evaluate the performance of new medical assistants during their training period
    • Conduct regular checkins and assessments to track progress and identify areas for improvement
    • Oversee the work of medical assistants during training periods
    • Provide constructive feedback and develop action plans for skill enhancement
  • Support and Mentorship:
    • Act as a mentor and resource for new medical assistants providing support and answering questions as they transition into their roles
    • Foster a supportive and collaborative learning environment
  • Compliance and Standards:
    • Ensure that all training programs comply with state and federal regulations
    • Promote adherence to the clinics standards of care and patient safety protocols
  • Floating Functions:
    • Provide support to various departments as needed
    • Fill in for medical assistants who are absent or on leave
    • Adapt to different clinical environments and workflows
    • Ensure continuity of care and support across departments

Qualifications

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Effective interpersonal skills
  • Effective communication with patients and coworkers
  • Ability to work as a team member
  • Bilingual in Spanish/Englishpreferred

Education and Experience:

  • Medical assistant certificate or signed training on venipuncture infectious control patient privacy basic anatomy and physiology by Registered Nurse or Physician
  • Minimum of 5year work experience as a Medical Assistant
  • Current BLS certification obtained through the American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • Valid drivers license and current personal auto insuranceas well as reliable transportation
  • Certified Medical Assistant preferred

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements

  • This job operates in an office as well as clinic settings and requires frequent times of sitting standing repetitive motion and talking
  • Ability to lift up to 40 pounds and move from place to place
  • Ensures compliance with policies and procedures related to safe work practices
  • Involves extensive travel to DAP Health locations throughout San Diego and the Coachella Valley
  • Available for all shifts and when required able to work evenings and weekends
