Job Description

Vanuatu Traditional Knowledge Curriculum Specialist

Earthwatch Australia in collaboration with the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Program (SPREP) and the Vanuatu Meteorology and GeoHazards Department (VMGD) seek a qualified Vanuatu Local Education Specialist. This specialist will work on the educational outreach aspects of the ClimateWatch Vanuatu program an IUCNs Global Ecosystembased Adaptation (GEbA) funded initiative aimed at enhancing climate change awareness and action through community engagement and education.

This is a fulltime role MayDecember 2025 ideally based in Vanuatu.

ClimateWatch Program Summary: ClimateWatch is a citizen science program that empowers individuals to contribute to climate change research by recording observations of local flora and fauna. The program aims to increase public awareness of climate change impacts and foster proenvironmental behaviors. In Vanuatu ClimateWatch focuses on engaging local communities particularly schools to participate in monitoring and reporting environmental changes.

Scope of Work

The specialist will ideally be based in Vanuatu and will work closely with Earthwatch Australia VMGD and SPREP to develop and implement the educational content.

Key activities include:

1. Creation of Educational Content:

  • Develop a suite of education modules in both English and Vanuatu Bislama for the ClimateWatch Vanuatu program that map to existing Traditional Knowledge curriculum;
  • Develop a plan to maintain the materials in a location and format that is accessible to schools and community members across five provinces.

2. School Engagement:

  • Identify opportunities and deliver School engagement programs including the training of teachers in the delivery of the ClimateWatch educational modules identifying any additional needs (computers tables internet connectivity) that may be required;
  • Develop and implement strategies to increase school engagement and participation in the ClimateWatch Vanuatu program beyond the duration of the project;
  • Provide feedback from school users to the ClimateWatch Vanuatu Team and communicate feedback to schools on data quality and use.

3. Reporting

  • Contribute to donor reporting requirements including Monitoring & Evaluation data

Deliverables

  • A suite of freely available educational modules for ClimateWatch Vanuatu in English and Vanuatu Bislama for schoolsbased delivery to be hosted in an accessible online and/or physical location
  • A detailed schools engagement strategy and implementation plan to deliver the content for the contract period
  • Delivery of teacher and student upskilling and schools support per the implementation plan
  • Recommendations for program expansion and enduring schools engagement beyond the contract period
  • Regular progress reporting including monitoring and evaluation data and financial acquittal as requested and a final report upon project completion.

Demonstrable Criteria

  • Proven experience in development and delivery of environmental science and/or Traditional Knowledge curriculum in Vanuatu
  • Local capacity to deliver teacher and student upskilling
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders meeting set branding style and accessibility guidelines
  • Strong networks in the Vanuatu education system
  • Aptitude in Microsoft Suite including Sharepoint and in a design software (such as Powerpoint Canva Adobe etc)
  • Ability to deliver projects on time and to a high standard

Submission Requirements

Interested candidates or organisations are requested to submit the following:

  • A cover letter outlining relevant experience and approach to the project including company profiles and short biographies of key staff
  • Examples of previous work in curriculum development and school engagement in Vanuatu
  • A proposed timeline and budget for the project for completion by December 2025

Submission deadline is Monday 12th May however early submissions are welcomed as interviews may take place prior to closing date. Interviews will be conducted via Microsoft Teams. Successful candidate will ideally start by 26 May.
