Job Description

Description

The Lab Technicians primary duty is to provide support related to equipping setup maintenance safety and delivery of laboratory/field sessions (including field trips and field courses) at Thompson Rivers University.


MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Maintains the inventory of supplies and courserelated equipment as needed for the laboratory/field facility.
  2. Maintains laboratory/field work facilities by organizing cleaning maintaining quality of samples and monitoring equipment use and maintenance.
  3. Operates standard laboratory/field equipment and some specialized equipment.
  4. Performs various clerical duties including reception duties faxing photocopying report processing/filing distributing results booking appointments recording attendance and data entry.
  5. Compiles statistical reports for month/year end reporting.
  6. Schedules use of Laboratory facility for teaching/learning.
  7. Organizing laboratory set up and take down in consultation with teaching Faculty.
  8. Works with Faculty to identify optimal use of Laboratory/Field equipment and technology for Laboratory/Field activities.
  9. Trains others in the use of Laboratory/Field equipment and technology.
  10. Maintains a safe environment in the laboratory.
  11. Participates in Quality Assurance/Quality Control programs as required by accreditation/approval standards and University protocols/policy.
  12. Works with Faculty to oversee work study students.
  13. Adheres to the requirements of the Office of Safety and Emergency Management as specified for each Department.

Requirements

EDUCATION:

  • Four 4 year undergraduate post secondary degree in relevant discipline or equivalent


EXPERIENCE:

  • Three 3 years related laboratory or field experience in related discipline


SKILLS KNOWLEDGE OR ABILITIES RELATED TO THE JOB

  • Demonstrated data entry skills
  • Demonstrated knowledge of safe laboratory and field practices
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently
  • Knowledge of the methods materials and techniques used in laboratory/field of the appropriate discipline
  • Knowledge of laboratory/field equipment appropriate to the area of the assignment


WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Sitting or standing desk for long periods of time
  • Dust fumes volatile chemicals biological materials electromagnetic fields power tools low energy radiation from equipment on a frequent basis depending on the department
  • Ability to lift weights in excess of 10 kg
  • Travel within BC
