Requirements
The Lab Technicians primary duty is to provide support related to equipping setup maintenance safety and delivery of laboratory/field sessions (including field trips and field courses) at Thompson Rivers University.
MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Maintains the inventory of supplies and courserelated equipment as needed for the laboratory/field facility.
- Maintains laboratory/field work facilities by organizing cleaning maintaining quality of samples and monitoring equipment use and maintenance.
- Operates standard laboratory/field equipment and some specialized equipment.
- Performs various clerical duties including reception duties faxing photocopying report processing/filing distributing results booking appointments recording attendance and data entry.
- Compiles statistical reports for month/year end reporting.
- Schedules use of Laboratory facility for teaching/learning.
- Organizing laboratory set up and take down in consultation with teaching Faculty.
- Works with Faculty to identify optimal use of Laboratory/Field equipment and technology for Laboratory/Field activities.
- Trains others in the use of Laboratory/Field equipment and technology.
- Maintains a safe environment in the laboratory.
- Participates in Quality Assurance/Quality Control programs as required by accreditation/approval standards and University protocols/policy.
- Works with Faculty to oversee work study students.
- Adheres to the requirements of the Office of Safety and Emergency Management as specified for each Department.

Requirements
EDUCATION:
- Four 4 year undergraduate post secondary degree in relevant discipline or equivalent
EXPERIENCE:
- Three 3 years related laboratory or field experience in related discipline
SKILLS KNOWLEDGE OR ABILITIES RELATED TO THE JOB
- Demonstrated data entry skills
- Demonstrated knowledge of safe laboratory and field practices
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work independently
- Knowledge of the methods materials and techniques used in laboratory/field of the appropriate discipline
- Knowledge of laboratory/field equipment appropriate to the area of the assignment
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Sitting or standing desk for long periods of time
- Dust fumes volatile chemicals biological materials electromagnetic fields power tools low energy radiation from equipment on a frequent basis depending on the department
- Ability to lift weights in excess of 10 kg
- Travel within BC
