Summary
Under the guidance of the Lead Clinical Laboratory Aide Phlebotomy Supervisor and/or Director performs phlebotomy and preanalytic processing of specimens received in the laboratory. Interacts professionally with patients clients and coworkers throughout the organization. Accurately performs all tasks associated with processing of specimens from receipt through appropriate distribution to the testing areas. Interacts professionally with patients clients and coworkers throughout the organization. Maintains integrity of collected samples at the proper temperature and does minimal processing of collected samples. Performs more specialized duties related to dispatch order entry phlebotomy referrals specimen setup processing and testing functions testing quality measures and special studies. Performs CLIA waived and moderately complex patient testing as well as inoculates microbiology media for culture.
Education
High school or equivalent (GED) required; associate degree in science preferred.
Certification Registration & Licensure
None.
Experience
Phlebotomy Course and Internship
1 5 Years in a Hospital or Laboratory Setting that includes Processing Specimen.
Responsibilities
Follows established procedures to obtain quality blood specimens from a wide variety of neonate infant child adult and geriatric patients using correct site equipment and techniques specific to patient location patient condition and test requested.
Responsible for narrating care as well as positive patient identification before obtaining laboratory specimens using protocols specific to each patient location.
Accurately labels specimens at the point of collection (in the presence of the patient) to assure quality and accuracy.
Accurately orders laboratory tests in the Electronic Health Record.
Maintains integrity of collected samples at the proper temperature and does minimal processing of collected samples.
