Job Description

Help protect one of Floridas most vital resources water with a career at theSouthwest Florida Water Management District (District).

The District is a government agency whose mission is to protect water resources minimize flood risks and ensure the publics water needs are met. We serve a population of nearly 6million people in westcentral Florida as directed by state law.

Here is your opportunity to assist our Environmental Scientists in the review of completed wetland impacts and mitigation construction by reviewing records or asbuilt plans and conducting onsite inspections of completed projects to determine compliance with the permitted design. The District offers the Student Internship Program to provide students with real work experience and specific handson knowledge related to the chosen course of study.

For helping to maintain our valuable water resources as a student we offer:

As an intern you are eligible to attend these onsite trainings.

Compensation: $16.00 hourly

Essential Functions

  • Ability to conduct site inspections of wetland mitigation areas
  • Ability to organize files of record documents and use word processing and spreadsheet software
  • Ability to review wetland monitoring reports and document onsite conditions of existing mitigation areas
  • Ability to review aerial photographs and information on GIS/ArcMap
  • Ability to draft correspondence for compliance ES staff

Working Conditions

Most work is conducted in a standard office environment. This position requires the ability to perform continuous repetitive tasks (to include keyboarding) with one or both hands. Must be able to lift and carry up to 20 pounds. Must be able to operate a District vehicle for two hours or more at a time. May be exposed to extremes in temperature and humidity as well as a variety of pests including mosquitoes and accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Work environments vary by assigned business unit.

Required Credentials for Environmental Compliance Student Intern

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Be at least parttime and currently enrolled in an accredited college university or other recognized educational or vocational program
  • Maintain a minimum GPAof 2.5 for undergraduate students or minimum GPA of 3.0 for graduate students
  • UploadUnofficialTranscripttoapplication or profile
  • Have the availability to worknear the maximum allowable hours weekly
  • Valid drivers license

Preferred Credentials forEnvironmental Compliance Student Intern

  • Experience interpreting and understanding engineering/environmental plans
  • Experience with time management and project deadlines
  • Experience communicating effectively with staff and the regulated public
  • Preferred Degrees:Biology Environmental Policy or related degree
  • Preferred Degree Level:Undergraduate

The District will determine eligibility for employment solely from the information provided on a District employment application. Additional Details

This position is typically scheduled to work no more than 25 hours per week between Monday through Friday 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM out of the TampaFL office. Schedule is contingent upon the decision of the hiring manager and the successful candidate.

Travel Required

travel using District vehicle within Districts coverage area.
