Job Description

Position Summary:

Diagnoses and treats diseases injuries and malformations of teeth and gums and related oral structures primarily for medically compromised adults and teenagers. Examine patient to determine nature of condition utilizing dental radiographs dental instruments and other diagnostic procedures.

Essential Functions of the Job:

  • Coordinates the preparation of reports and written documentation as required by the department company state and federal agencies.
  • Consults with patients and advises them of their dental status prescribes the treatment required provides risks and alternatives and documents according to department company state and federal agency guidelines. Also responsible for including the patients financial responsibilities.
  • Cleans restores extracts and replaces teeth using rotary and hand instruments dental appliances medications and surgical equipment.
  • Treats soft hard tissues diseases of the oral cavity; performs surgery on oral tissues when necessary; renders prosthetic treatment when approved and indicated; designs and places orthodontic devices to correct minor malocclusion of teeth and renders any and all dental services to restore the oral health of the patient.
  • Provides preventive dental services to patients such as applications of fluoride and sealants to teeth and provides education in oral health and dental hygiene.
  • Communicate and manage adjunct faculty in the program as to educational goals essential experiences progress exams and competencies.
  • Manage students and residents as they develop and work through patient treatment plans achieve educational goals and attain competencies.
  • Assist with development and maintenance of accreditation.
  • Conduct daily/weekly meetings with students faculty and staff to review issues/plans/events and student /resident achievement.
  • Work with staff and faculty to train adjunct faculty to achieve clinical calibration.
  • Complete administrative reports as needed.
  • Track student and resident progress and collaborate with the Director of Clinical Education and Assoc. Dean for PostDoctoral Education on deficiencies on a periodic basis.
  • Assure patient student/resident and staff safety and safety communication.
  • Perform chair side duties as necessary to facilitate patient care and student and resident education.

Additional Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Complies with established departmental policies and procedures objectives quality assurance program safety environmental and infection control standards.
  • While adhering to providing high quality dental services the provider is encouraged to obtain 16 patient encounters per day on a monthly average.

  • Enhance professional growth and development through participation in educational programs current literature inservice meetings and workshops.
  • Attends meetings as required and participates on committees as directed.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

Job Requirements


Experience Required:

  • 2 years experience in general clinical practice preferred.
  • 2 years experience overseeing support staff preferred.

Education Required:

  • Dental Board recognized DDS or DMD Degree.
  • Successful completion of an Advanced Education in General Dentistry program (AEGD) or General Practice Residency (GPR) with an emphasis in treating adults with special needs.

Certifications/License Required:

  • Valid license to practice dentistry in the State of California.
  • Current DEA License.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certificate (ACLS).

Verbal and Written Skills Required to Perform the Job:

  • Bilingual Preferred (English/Spanish).
  • Good oral and written communication.
  • Diplomacy a must.
  • Individual must be organized.
  • Good communication skills with the public and other employees.
  • Adaptable and motivated.
  • Able to work independently.
  • Team oriented strong mentoring and personable.
  • Patience and understanding toward others.

Technical Knowledge and Skills Required to Perform the Job:

  • Computer skills involving word processing email and dental management programs such as EPIC are preferable.

Equipment Used:

  • Dental operatory equipment laboratory sterilization equipment and front office equipment.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:

  • You will be required to engage in prolonged extensive frequent and repetitive standing sitting walking stooping twisting kneeling reaching crouching bending and position changes to examine and service patients which may involve getting into awkward positions to access patients teeth.
  • You must be able to lift up to 30 pounds occasionally.
  • Moderate noise levels from dental drills and other lab equipment should be expected.
  • Protective gear including masks safety glasses and rubber gloves is mandatory.
  • Working in close quarters and near other people with little space between yourself and others is a necessity.
  • Exposure to radiation mercury and anesthetic gases is a possibility.
  • You may encounter contaminants diseases and infections while working with patients.
  • Manual dexterity and mobility are crucial including the ability to keep your hand and arm steady while moving quickly move your hand grasp and manipulate objects and demonstrate exceptional handeye coordination control and finger dexterity to use dental implements for exams mixing placing materials on dental tools productsand in mouths and assemble very small objects.
  • Occasional travel.
  • May be required to work evenings and or Saturdays and attend meetings outside clinic working hours.
  • Will on occasion work at schools or WIC sites.
  • Will work with blood and bloodborne pathogens and will require OSHA training on a yearly basis.

Universal Requirements:

Preemployment requirements include I9 physical positive background and reference check results complete application new hire orientation preemployment PPDs. Compliance with all mandated vaccinations and all boosters is a term and condition of employment.
