Job Description

Position Information

Under direction supervises and manages professional clinical workers in the areas of child protective services adult services senior services or juvenile services; and performs related work as required.


This is an Open Competitive/Countywide Promotional recruitment being conducted to fill a current fulltime vacancy in the Juvenile Services department. The list established from this recruitment may be used to fill future vacancies throughout the County as they occur.

Three years of fulltime experience performing clinical case work AND a masters degree from accredited college or university in social work marriage and family therapy counseling psychology or closely related field AND licensure in the State of Nevada to practice as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker a Marriage and Family Therapist or a Clinical Professional Counselor.

The Ideal Candidate


Juvenile Services Department (current vacancy)

The ideal candidate will have experience providing therapy and case management to atrisk adolescents and their families as well as knowledge of mental health services and other community resources including how to effectively navigate them. This candidate will oversee a mental health services unit for both detention and probation services within the Jan Evans Juvenile Justice Center. They will provide oversight and support to therapists in detention who deliver supportive therapy crisis therapy and assessments to youth and may also supervise therapists assigned to a communitybased therapy program that upholds highquality assurance standards. Additionally this individual will provide guidance supervision and training to Juvenile Services staff. Prior mental health supervisory experience is required.

Human Services Agency Housing and Homeless Services Division
The ideal candidate will have experience providing therapy and casework to vulnerable adult populations including those experiencing homelessness. The individual selected for this position will function as a team lead providing trainingguidance and supervision to County employed as well as contracted staff. The Mental Health Counselor Supervisor will be responsible for providing direct client services as needed and will have knowledge of best practices in working with individuals experiencing homelessness and an understanding of crisis intervention strategies. They will also have an awareness of current community resources and how to assist participants with navigating complex care systems. As a part of the administrative team the ideal candidate will have a working knowledge of medical billing and reimbursement structures for mental health services plus an understanding of local State and Federal laws that impact service provision to this population. Additionally this individual will assist with the development of policies and procedures for their team as well as assist with quality assurance projects and data collection and reporting.


Human Services Agency CPS Division
The ideal candidate will have experience providing therapy and casework to children and families and will lead a team of licensed Mental Health Counselor staff clinical interns and Case Workers offering training guidance and supervision as well as direct client services. This position will be responsible for taking part in and leading agency teams and initiatives including program implementation data collection and reporting on a Local State and Federal level. The selected candidate will provide oversight and guidance to the Mental Health Counselors clinical interns and caseworkers making up our clinical services team for Child Protective Services. An ideal candidate will be bilingual in Spanish be a Certified Alcohol & Drug Abuse Counselor or Certified Alcohol & Drug Abuse Counselor Intern or Licensed Alcohol & Drug Counselor or Licensed Clinical Alcohol & Drug Abuse Counselor.

Conditions of Employment

Juvenile Services (current vacancy)
The Mental Health Counselor Supervisor position located at the Juvenile Services Department is not covered by a bargaining unit.
Juvenile Services employees will be required to have a tuberculosis test. The cost of the test will be borne by the selected applicant(s).
Juvenile Services will need first aid/CPR certification at the time of appointment.

Human Services Agency
The Mental Health Counselor Supervisor position located at the Human Services Agency is covered by the Washoe County Employees Association (WCEA) Supervisory. Certain positions in the Human Services Agency have access to criminal justice agency systems including NCIC and CJIS. All felony convictions gross misdemeanor and certain misdemeanors will prohibit that employee from working with NCIC and CJIS criminal justice systems. Additionally Human Services Agency will run a background check via the Child Abuse and Neglect Registry.

Additional Conditions (Human Services Agency):
Background checks will be conducted on selected applicants through the State of Nevada and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

Per the Washoe County Background and Reference Checks Policy new and rehired employees are required to submit to a fingerprint based background investigation. Effective January 1 2025 the $39.00 fee associated with this background investigation will be paid by the employee (if applicable) and deducted automatically from the first paycheck. Employment is contingent upon the results of the background check although a record of conviction will not necessarily bar an applicant from employment.


Human Services Agency employees will be required to have a tuberculosis test. The cost of the test will be borne by the selected applicant(s).


Washoe County requires its employees to reside in the state of Nevada or neighboring California communities such as Truckee South Lake Tahoe or Susanville as of their first day of work.

Washoe County hires all new employees at the minimum rate of the salary range and eligible employees may receive an annual merit increase of 5 until they reach the maximum salary for the classification. What Happens Next

2. Applicants who meet the minimum requirements for the Mental Health Counselor Supervisor position will be placed on an unranked eligible list. The examination is waived for this recruitment in accordance with the Washoe County Personnel Handbook 5.160.

Pursuant to the Washoe County Personnel Handbook 5.160 waiver of examination. The director of human resources may waive examination for those classes requiring specific training education certification licensure experience or when there are an insufficient number of qualified candidates.

3. Candidates who meet the minimum requirements will be placed on an unranked eligible list for the department to interview upon the close of the recruitment. For continuous/open until filled recruitments candidates who meet the minimum requirements will be referred for an interview on an ongoing basis until the position is filled.
