Job Description
ALL ELIGIBLE CANDIDATES MUST HAVE PE LICENSE
The New York City Department of Correction (DOC) is an integral part of the Citys evolving criminal justice system participating in reform initiatives and strategies aimed to move the City towards a smaller jail system without compromising public safety. The DOC is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for our employees visitors volunteers and people in our custody. Importantly safe jails enable DOC to provide people in custody with the tools and opportunities they need to successfully reenter their communities. The DOC operates facilities and court commands across the five boroughs with more than 7500 diverse professionals and knowledgeable experts.
Under the general direction of the Executive Director of the Engineering Unit the selected candidate will perform mechanical engineering design work of moderate difficulty including reviews and management of the work product of consultants for technical accuracy completeness timeliness and cost effectiveness.
The selected candidate shall be a Mechanical Engineer experienced in designing heating
ventilating air conditioning plumbing and fire protection systems for the complex
institutional and/or jail facilities.
The candidate will perform design reviews for the designs submitted by the private
engineering consultants and perform inhouse designs for DOCs construction program.
Duties will also include preparing project scopes; prepare cost estimates; perform site
surveys and facility inspections; prepare project reports; perform facility condition
assessment surveys; prepare inhouse designs using AutoCAD & Revit; provide
technical expertise and support services for the complex Departmental projects
The candidate will interface with DOC user groups DOC maintenance divisions
consultants contractors and inhouse design and construction units oversights other
City/State and Federal agencies DOC senior staff and inhouse technical staffs section
engineer in charge of a major mechanical engineering section or equivalent.

Qualifications :
1 Four 4 years of fulltime satisfactory experience in mechanical engineering work; and
2 A valid New York State Professional Engineers License. Current New York State registration as a Professional Engineer must be maintained for the duration of your employment.
A masters degree in mechanical engineering from an accredited college or university accredited by regional national professional or specialized agencies recognized as accrediting bodies by the U.S. Secretary of Education and by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) may be substituted for one year of the mechanical engineering experience required in 1 above.
Special Note:
In addition to above qualification requirements to be eligible for placement in Assignment Levels II and III individuals must have at least one year within the last three years of experience as a major contributor or a project leader on a complex project requiring additional and specific expertise in the disciplines needed to design or construct the project.
