Job Description

Basic Function

The current vacancy is in the Sheriffs Office. The eligibility list created by this vacancy may be used to hire other vacancies in the Sheriffs Office or County.



The person filling this position will participate in and provide guidance or direct the work of a technical work group and law enforcement staff following National IncidentBased Reporting Technical and User Specification Guidelines within a Records Management System. Perform incident report quality control submit incident reports to a State Crime Reporting System complete postsubmission incident report corrections and data quality assurance submissions analyze and prepare detailed crime reports; and perform related records and reporting duties as assigned.

Examples of Work Performed

  1. Collect and analyze various evidence crime incident calls for service arrest and other data generated by the department.
  2. Identify and analyze evolving or existing crime patterns series and hot spots and identify suspects.
  3. Create profiles of known offenders and arrestees and research their past crimes or related evidence in order to establish behavioral characteristics (modus operendi).
  4. Analyze known offenders modus operendi to perform suspect crime correlations in order to provide suspect leads and targets for surveillance or directed patrol.
  5. Use computer databases electronic spreadsheets desktop publishing word processing geographical information systems (GIS) and statistical applications to manipulate analyze and present data or related evidence.
  6. Collect analyze and interpret data and statistics using qualitative and quantitative methodologies.
  7. Monitor real time cameras to provide immediate real time information to law enforcement track evidence to ensure evidence is maintained in proper order.
  8. Perform law enforcement activities in the area of legal process services including confirming warrants through local and national databases when applicable.
  9. Prepare detailed analytical products such as reports graphs charts and maps to aide in investigations and provide recommendations for effective strategies in the prevention of crime.
  10. Act as a liaison with other state local and federal law enforcement agencies and prosecutors offices.
  11. Write complete clear and concise reports summarizing the findings of investigations; maintain administrative investigative and statistical files and records.
  12. Testify in court or before panels as necessary. Make oral presentations using charts graphs to inform deputies investigators and commanders of emerging or existing crime series patterns and trends as well as suspect and victim profiles; or examination of evidence.
  13. Prepare and publish crime analysis bulletins indicating criminal trends and provide analysis and explanation for these trends as well as other correlations and indicators collect and review bulletins from surrounding law enforcement agencies highlighting relevant crime information as it pertains to the departments contracted cities.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Completion of twoyear Associates degree in Public Safety Criminal Justice Law Enforcement or related field.

Experience: Three years of experience in a Public Safety Agency.

Substitution: Equivalent combination of education and related experience.

Certifications/Licensure: None.

Exam/Screening Process Information

The examination process will consist of the following section with each section weighted as indicated:



The examination for Investigative Assistant will consist of a training and experience rating comprised of the questions in the attached supplemental questionnaire. Not all applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will pass the training and experience rating. The rating on this supplemental questionnaire will depend on your answers to the questions do not mark see resume or see work history as a response. Please answer all your questions clearly and completely. Failure to respond could affect your score and final rank on this examination.


Eligible List: The names of all applicants who filed a properly completed application and passed the examination/screening process shall be placed on the eligible list for an employment opportunity as an Investigative Assistant. This list will be certified to the appointing authority which may use this list to conduct interviews to fill a vacancy. Candidates will remain on the list for 60 days or until hired whichever occurs first. A notice will be sent to applicants at the time the eligible list is posted informing them that the list has been certified and their status.


The names of all applicants who pass the examination with a score of55or higher will be forwarded to the department for further consider.

Veterans Preference: This is a classified position requiring an open competitive selection process. Veterans Preference points will be applied after a candidate passes the examination process. Applicants who are eligible for veterans preference should update their veterans DD214 and other supporting documents and submit them as an attachment at the time of application.


Criminal Background Checks: All employment offers are conditioned upon the applicant passing a criminal background check. Convictions are not an automatic bar to employment. Each case is considered on its individual merits and the type of work sought. However making false statements or withholding information will cause you to be barred from employment or removed from employment.


EVerify Participation: Ramsey County participates in the federal EVerify program. This means that Ramsey County will provide the Social Security Administration (SSA) and if necessary the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) with information from each new employees Form I9 to confirm work authorization. If the Government cannot confirm that you are authorized to work Ramsey County is required to give you written instructions and an opportunity to contact DHS and/or the SSA before taking adverse action against you including terminating your employment. Employers may not use EVerify to prescreen job applicants and may not limit or influence the choice of documents you present for use on the Form I9.
