Under the general supervision of the Community Engagement Manager the Crew Supervisor oversees implements manages crew operations of the City of Richmonds USDAfunded tree planting grant. This 5year grant will provide Richmond with 1000 new trees to be planted citywide. This grant also supports the reduction of impervious surfaces by creating new tree lawns. This position leads and oversees the daily operations of a maintenance crew assigned to increasing and maintaining the urban tree canopy. The Crew Supervisor also provides tree planting training and supervision to members of the departments Workforce Development Program. The successful candidate should demonstrate management experience in an urban parks or other related settings will have a clear understanding of tree biology and care sustainability concepts and can work with a diverse population.
About the Grant:
A coalition of Black and BrownLed CommunityBased Organizations and the City of Richmond were awarded a $6 million Urban and Community Forestry Grant by the US Department of Agriculture. This fiveyear grant funds the development of an Urban Forest Master Plan including a street tree inventory urban tree canopy assessment tree equity assessment the planting and maintenance of 3000 urban trees engagement with local communities certification of urban agriculture professionals and the removal of invasive species within disadvantaged communities.
Oversees the implementation of the tree planting and maintenance plan established by the grant narrative.
Supervises the tree crews daily operations. Ensures maintenance and planting plans are executed to specification safely and on time.
Operates specialized equipment tools and vehicles in the process of performing tree planting maintenance and sidewalk removal.
Equipment used includes but is not limited to: Tracked skid steers Backhoes dump truck miniexcavators offroad vehicles.
Tools used include but are not limited to: hand tools (Pulaski mattocks shovel rake etc. chainsaws power tools.
Trains crew members workforce development participants and other Parks maintenance staff to operate equipment amend soil and improve tree health as established by outcomes in the grant narrative.
Manages volunteer tree plantings and maintenance to provide productive educational and rewarding experiences for the public.
Educates public on established the objectives of the grant and provides support to community inquiries.
Maintains logs and inventories to track progress of planted trees and removed sidewalk.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Due to the nature of work assignments incumbents must be able to perform detailed work on multiple concurrent tasks with frequent interruptions and under time constraint. The essential duties of this classification may require the ability to regularly stand walk lift finger grasp talk see hear and use substantial repetitive motions of the wrists hands and fingers; frequently climb balance stoop kneel crouch reach push pull lift feel; and occasionally crawl push and pull. The working conditions may include frequent exposure to hazardous physical conditions and hazardous materials; occasional exposure to atmospheric conditions extreme temperatures intense noise travel outside the organizations location and environmental hazards. In terms of the physical strength to perform the essential duties this classification is considered to be medium work exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally up to 20 pounds of force frequently and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
