The Opportunity
WSDOT is seeking an energetic Drillers Helpers to join our Materials Lab team in Seattle WA. This is an intraining opportunity that offers a career path handson learning and mentorship and allows you to progress upward through the Transportation Technician series and achieve the goal class of a Transportation Technician 3. To be successful in this role you will need to enjoy handson work that is very physically demanding as well as have exceptional attention to detail. This position provides subsurface drilling and soil/rock field testing services for the NW Region Geotechnical Services Division. This unit is focused on providing geotechnical drilling services for the design and construction of structure foundations retaining walls soil cuts and fills as well as the installation of geotechnical monitoring instrumentation (piezometers slope inclinometers etc. in accordance with applicable Department of Ecology regulations and Washington Administrative Codes.
What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role the Drillers Helper will:
- Assist the driller in conducting subsurface testing and sampling for bridges retaining walls soil cuts and fills rock slopes landslides and pits and quarries region wide.
- Lift drilling steel attach/detach casing and drilling rods prepare mud box mix drilling mud operate pumps and attach/detach winch to drilling steel.
- Continually transports up to 60 lbs. to help operate the drill rig.
- Assist the driller in installing geotechnical monitoring instrumentation.
Qualifications
An ideal candidate for the Transportation Technician 1 position will have:
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
- Ability to work in all types of weather (sun wind rain snow etc..
- Ability to transport 60 lbs. regularly throughout the workday.
- Valid Drivers License
An ideal candidate forthe Transportation Technician 2position will have:
- In addition to the requirements of the TT1 one year of experience assisting in the operation of a drill rig
An ideal candidate forthe Transportation Technician 3position will have:- In addition to the requirements of the TT1 two years of experience assisting in the operation of a drill rig.
- Valid Commercial Driver Licenses (Class A)
It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
- Experience assisting in the operation of wheel track and skid mounted drill equipment and the associated support equipment (boom truck water truck support truck etc..
- Washington Department of Ecology Well Construction Operators License.
Important Notes
- This recruitment may also be used to fill additional positions per business needs.
- This position is not eligible for remote work.
- The salary listed includes the legislative approved 5 salary premium for positions in King County.
- Note: This position includes an approved intraining plan; therefore it may be filled at the Transportation Technician 1 2 or 3 level depending on salaries for these classifications are as follows:
Transportation Technician 1: $46972 $62836 annually depending on qualifications
Transportation Technician 2: $56914 $76570 annually depending on qualifications
Transportation Technician 3: $64474 $86637 annually depending on qualifications - In addition to base salary employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type duties or location of the position. For unionrepresented positions more information on other forms of compensation can be found in the applicableCollective Bargaining Agreements. Information on other compensation types for nonrepresented positions can be found inChapter 35728of the Washington Administrative Code.
