What does Brice Marine LLC do

Construction operations in Alaska are logistically challenging with many communities only accessible by water or air. Continuing its commitment to excellence Brice decided to invest in marine capabilities. In 1973 Brice Marine was established with the refurbishment of a surplus Navy LCU. Over 40 years later Brice Marine transports employees equipment fuel and materials to remote sites around the world. Its vessels have navigated some of the most difficult stretches of water and successfully delivered equipment despite bad weather shallow water and challenging conditions. The company also engineered a cuttingedge tug/barge design that streamlines the shipping process.

What can you expect

As the Engineer you will work on the vessel and will be responsible for the maintenance of all machinery aboard the vessel and the tow including heavy equipment on the barge. You will be required to come in during the off season for preinspection on the vessel at the mutual agreement of management.

How will you do it

  • Safely operate and efficiently maintain the vessels machinery.
  • Repair all machinery and equipment onboard the vessel.
  • Perform the proper operation and maintenance of all mechanical equipment on the boat and its tow per the captains direction.
  • Responsible for all engine room tools and equipment.
  • Oversee the transfer and inventory of necessary fuel water and lube oil to the boat following company procedures.
  • Follow all U.S. Coast Guard regulations when taking on fuel.
  • Keep decks free of oil and fuel.
  • Order machinery parts and engine room supplies on a timely basis in accordance with company purchasing procedures.
  • Ensure that the fire pump is always ready for emergency use.
  • Ensure the proper operation of fire hoses and nozzles.
  • Report to the Captain any malfunction of the firefighting equipment beyond the repair capabilities of vessel personnel.
  • Take immediate charge in the case of a fire aboard a boat and/or tow until properly relieved.
  • Coordinate the starting and stopping of machinery with the deck officer on watch.
  • Participate in required gear tests prior to departure and arrival.
  • Notify the Brice Marine Operations office for assistance if outside mechanical assistance is required.
  • Complete and forward work orders for all work which is beyond the capability of the engine room personnel to the Brice Marine Operations office.
  • Maintain the fuel and lube inventory and usage records.
  • Retain the maintenance logs daily engine logs and trip reports.
  • Assist with loading lashing and discharge of freight.
  • Ensure that no chemicals additives or cleaning materials other than those listed in the company SDS book for the appropriate location are used or stored aboard the assigned vessels.
  • Work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner.
  • Perform other duties as directed.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Knowledge Skills & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of maritime laws and regulations.
  • Knowledge of the maintenance operation and recharging procedures for all onboard fire extinguishers and the fixed fire system.
  • Knowledge of the maintenance and operation of other firefighting equipment (e.g. fire hoses nozzles fire pumps automatic systems) available to or on board the vessel.
  • Ability to pick up and secure pumps hoses and fire extinguishers when no longer needed.
  • Ability to maintain all machinery according to procedures approved by the operations office and the manufacturer of the equipment.
  • Ability to change oils and fluids according to company procedures.
  • Ability to maintain a clean and safe work area aboard the vessel.
  • Ability to read write and communicate in English.
  • Ability to perform basic arithmetic including addition subtraction multiplication and division.
  • Ability to read and interpret tank strapping charts various tables safety manuals navigation books and environmental manuals.
  • Ability to solve personnel problems make clear rational decisions in a crisis.
  • Ability to clearly formulate and communicate orders coupled with the ability to perform both short and longterm planning to accomplish vessel and company goals.
  • Ability to make decisions exhibit sound and accurate judgment support and explain reasoning for decisions follow decisionmaking process and make timely decisions.
  • Ability to be reliable responsible dependable and able to fulfill obligations.
  • Ability to prioritize and plan work activities; uses time efficiently; plan for additional resources; sets goals and objectives; develop realistic action plans.

  • Ability to travel to remote locations for work related purposes for extended periods of time (approximately 100 of the time as needed).
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule sometimes including weekends and holidays.

Who is Brice Marine LLC looking for

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Current TWIC card required.
  • Current Coast Guard MMC required.
  • Must be able to pass and maintain a Coast Guard physical exam for merchant mariners.
  • Ability to pass a drug and background screening.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 2 years experience as an Engineer preferred.
  • Previous Alaska water navigation experience preferred.

Working Environment:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The length of navigation season in Western and Interior Alaska is dictated by the spring breakup of the ice and the low water and return of ice in late fall. The actual navigation season lasts approximately 180 days. Crews normally work the entire season 7 days a week 12 hours per day without any time off other than vessel downtime. The work can be emotionally challenging and requires a stable welladjusted personality. While underway the Engineer works a 12hour shift at the direction of the Captain.
