Department of Communication

Cornell Universitys Department of Communication is an international leader in the study of communication as a social science. Our faculty and students are dedicated to understanding the role and enhancing the effectiveness of communication processes systems and infrastructure in society. We explore communication in its many forms and contexts as a fundamentally social phenomenon. Current work in the department related to these positions includes a focus on public opinion about environmental issues public engagement with emerging technologies rural communities migration issues and risk perception and policy. Our faculty members are recognized for developing and applying novel theoretical perspectives to the most pressing social and policy issues of the day. The department is housed in a stateoftheart office space that encourages collaborative work. Department faculty participate actively in Cornells interdisciplinary community such as through the Cornell Center for Social Sciences the Cornell Atkinson Center for Sustainability the Bronfenbrenner Center for Translational Research Cornell Tech Brooks School of Public Policy and the Weill Cornell Medical College and they collaborate with faculty in other departments such as Information Science; Science & Technology Studies; Feminist Gender and Sexuality Studies; the S.C. Johnson College of Business among many others. We welcome candidates who understand the barriers facing women and other marginalized identities who are underrepresented in the classroom and in higher education careers (as evidenced by life experiences and educational background) and who have experience in equity and diversity with respect to teaching mentoring research outreach life experiences or service towards building an equitable and diverse scholarly environment.

Position Function

The Department of Communication at Cornell University invites applications for a 9month fulltime Lecturer position at 100 FTE. We seek a colleague to join our dynamic program and make strong teaching contributions to our curriculum. This position requires an experienced instructor in the field of communication or related field to teach 4 courses across 2 semesters: 2 sections of Environmental Communication (COMM 3210 Risk Communication (COMM 4860 and Persuasion & Social Influence (COMM 2760 courses critical to our risk/environmental comm concentration.

Requirements

The successful candidate will have earned a Ph.D. in communication or related field with at least one year of undergraduate teaching experience in risk and environmental communication and persuasion and social influence. Candidates must have excellent oral and written communication skills.

Supervision Exercised

The position requires supervision of teaching assistants.

This is a oneyear term appointment with the possibility of extension that is contingent upon available work funding and performance.

CALS hiring salary for this title is $60000.
