Job Description

Under the direction of the Senior Vice President of Environmental Affairs the Senior Director of Compliance will oversee and direct the environmental and permitting compliance program for Apexs portfolio of commercialscale wind solar and storage and distributed generation facility projects from construction through operations. The Senior Director of Compliance will provide environmental and permitting technical expertise and strategic direction to project teams ensuring alignment with the adopted company compliance policy ethics and commitment to the five core values while maintaining the highest standard of environmental stewardship and regulatory compliance with all permits including local state and federal permits (both discretionary and environmental) stormwater discharge permits and spill prevention/control plans.

The Senior Director of Compliance will consistently champion a culture of environmental compliance by facing construction and operational challenges proactively and focusing on continuous improvement of project best management practices through collaborative relationships with key internal and external project stakeholders. The ideal candidate will have comprehensive compliance and permitting technical expertise amongst local state and federal environmental laws and regulations as well as excellent communication organizational and program management skills with highvisibility multimilliondollar infrastructure projects. 

Primary Responsibilities  

The Senior Director of Compliance is responsible for overseeing the companys adopted compliance plan and policies. This includes:  

  • Ensure that the companys adopted compliance plan and policies are enacted for all relevant issued permits and conditions including shorterterm construction and longterm operational compliance.
  • As a multifaceted subject matter expert manage and lead the review and implementation of all issued relevant permits and conditions for internal and external project stakeholders in order to draft comprehensive project compliance plans to ensure compliance is met to the highest standards.
  • Develop and manage internal procedures to ensure timely reports to internal stakeholders and required notifications to local state and federal government agencies (i.e. any requirements to remain in compliance with issued permits and conditions).
  • Develop metrics and tools to establish and track Key Performance Indicators for compliance along with development of best management practices.
  • Develop and implement training and educational tools to support construction and operations teams in meeting regulatory obligations and permit requirements.
  • Oversee site environmental incident investigations including root cause investigation and corrective action(s) and conduct compliance assessments when necessary and communicate findings and solutions to address areas of opportunities in best practices.
  • Work crossdepartmentally to maintain clear communication and expectations as pertaining to environmental compliance.
  • Participating in the development and of a project permitting strategy in close collaboration with each Project team.
  • Working crossdepartmentally to maintain clear communication and smooth collaboration at early stages of the project development process as it pertains to permitting.
  • Oversee field environmental compliance specialists and conduct routine site visits to verify the compliance program is enacted and ensure corrective actions are implemented as needed within required timeframes.

Qualifications :

To succeed as a Senior Director of Compliance at Apex Clean Energy youll need to display excellence within the following criteria:

  • Bachelor of Science or advanced degree in environmental science engineering juris doctorate or related field; masters degree preferred.
  • 10 years of compliance program experience and implementation of local state and federal environmental and other related laws and regulations. Direct compliance experience with commercialscale wind solar projects and/or utility generation and transmission line compliance is required.
  • Experience in a supervisory role.
  • Promote a culture of compliance to ensure efficient compliance management practices are adhered to along with demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within and lead multidisciplinary teams.
  • Candidate must be adept at problemsolving with a high level of initiative demonstrating a track record of making sound decisions both independently and collaboratively while under pressure.
  • Experience coordinating and ability to articulate clearly and effectively with internal staff external consultants vendors construction contractors regulators and other stakeholders.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to handle time to meet frequently changing deadlines in a rapidly changing environment.
  • Exemplary standards of safety honor ethics quality communication productivity and continuous improvement.
  • Adept at problemsolving and creative thinking.
  • Articulate with the ability to lead and assist with management client and public presentations.
  • Exceptional planning organizational written and oral communication skills.
  • Willing and able to travel up to 30.
