Job Description
Weight Room Specialists are responsible for the daily operations of the Cardiovascular/Resistance Training(CRT) areas at Ambler Student Recreation Fitness Center including but not limited to providing a safe exercise environment; assisting patrons; enforcing policies; cleaning and organizing fitness equipment. Shifts include early morning afternoon evenings and/or late evenings during the week and weekend. A Weight Room Specialist must be certified in CPR/AED or become certified within four weeks afterbeing appointed. Duties will include but are not limited to the following:

50 Risk Management
  • Monitor all fitness areas mitigating risk of injury or damage to facility or equipment.
  • Enforce policies and procedures.
  • Pickup and organize weight plates cable accessories dumbbells etc.
  • Ensure participants use proper technique when utilizing fitness equipment.
  • Ensure emergency door is not blocked by participants working out.
  • Spot lifts for participants.
  • Implement emergency action procedures as needed.
  • Obtain and maintain proper CPR/AED certification.
25 Cleaning Responsibilities
  • Pickup and sort dirty towels; fold clean towels; and replenish towel stations with clean towels.
  • Refill bottles with disinfectant solution.
  • Hourly cleaning duties of all cardiovascular/resistance training equipment as assigned.
15 Customer Service
  • Answer participant questions such as utilizing fitness equipment.
  • Assist participants with use of lockers and ensure they are unlocked for use.
  • Knowledge of various exercises for different muscle groups.
  • Ability to demonstrate use of cardiovascular/resistance training equipment.
10 Other
  • Substituting shifts when available.
  • Report repair and maintenance requests.
  • Use twoway radio.
  • Complete daily shift reports and incident and accident reports as needed.
  • Turn on/off TVs.
  • Required to attend staff meetings and trainings.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Work Schedule
Between the hours of: Monday through Thursday 5:45am10:45pm Friday 5:45am 9:15pm Saturday 8:45am5:15pm and Sunday 12:45pm10:45pm.
Will be scheduled to work opening closing and weekend shifts

  1. Experience using cardiovascular and resistance training equipment including selectorized machines plate loaded machines and free weights.
  2. Excellent communication skills as evidenced by application materials/interview.
  3. During the semester term of the appointment the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: 1 have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or 2 be preenrolled in upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or 3 be enrolled in summer session or 4 be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students.


  1. Previous experience working in a recreation center weight room health club or gym setting.
  2. Exercise Science Kinesiology Health or related major.
  3. Selfstarter and takes initiative.
  4. Excellent verbal and written communication.
  5. Experience in conflict resolution.


Position Overview
KU Recreation Services provides a variety of resources for wellness physical fitness team and individual sports group fitness classes and personal training. Indoor and outdoor facilities accommodate a broad range of athleticism from beginners looking to improve their health with low impact exercise to seasoned athletes aspiring to push their physical abilities to the next level.

Per the State of Kansas student employees may hold concurrent appointments not to exceed
maximum appointment and hours worked levels. However concurrent student appointments must be of matching FLSA designation (exempt/salaried or nonexempt/hourly).
