Job Description

Position Summary

The Opportunity:Skagit Valley College has an outstanding opportunity for an Academic Advisor. The Academic Advisor will work as part of a student advising team to provide educational planning appreciative advising and resource support to students in technical and/or transfer pathways. The incumbent will assist students to identify and develop their educational goals. The position will collaborate with college staff faculty and community partners to develop and enhance relationships to improve progress and completion rates for students. This position will work within the Counseling and Advising Department as part of a broader Student Services team of staff and faculty.

This is a 12month 100 of fulltime position working 40 hours per week. The Academic Advisor will primarily be assigned to work at the Mount Vernon Campus. Travel to the Whidbey Island campus in Oak Harbor WA will be required occasionally.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Utilize an Appreciative Advising framework to provide accurate and timely advising to an assigned caseload of Skagit Valley College students;
  • Support students through codevelopment of individualized education plans with appropriate classes that align with their career personal and educational goals;
  • Provide guidance to students on understanding college policies and procedures utilizing online services and accessing student support resources;
  • Build a positive mentoring relationship with students and assist them in identifying and resolving issues that impede their academic success;
  • Help onboard incoming students through New Student Registration with strengthsbased advising and coaching;
  • Track student progress review and update educational plans provide proactive outreach and success strategies aimed at retaining students;
  • Support ongoing caseload of student advisees as determined by the Dean of Advising & Student Success; This could include STEM Running Start International Students Athletes or other special populations;
  • Complete outreach to students through the colleges Early Alert system;
  • Develop coordinate and facilitate campuswide programs to increase student success retention and progression;
  • Work as part of an academic hub with faculty and other advising staff to support students and provide programming for students pursuing specific areas of study;
  • Assist students in completing petitions for financial aid and academic reinstatement;
  • Regularly meet in person by phone or virtually with students to provide information resources and support;
  • Present to and meet with prospective students families and community partners on academic programs pathways and resources at Skagit Valley College;
  • Communicate with academic departments regarding timely knowledge of degree certificate and program requirements relevant to assigned caseload and Area(s) of Study;
  • Attend department meetings training or conferences necessary to meet the duties and responsibilities of the position;
  • Maintain accurate and detailed documentation regarding student interactions utilizing technology including the colleges customer relationship management system;
  • Use data to track students progress advocate for needed change and support retention efforts;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

Knowledge and/or understanding of:

  • An appropriate awareness of the history of underrepresented groups and promote an equitable work and learning environment;
  • College admission counseling registration and financial aid policies and processes;
  • Resources available to students from counseling disability support services SVC Foundation and financial aid; Community resources for food housing funding and assessment;
  • Educational programs including Basic Skills developmental education and professional/technical certificates and transfer degrees;
  • Basic knowledge of funding plans for students and assist students in applying for Federal Financial Aid scholarships and other SVC funds;
  • Transfer and career pathways;
  • State and federal laws affecting Skagit Valley College;
  • MS Office applications including Outlook Word and Excel;
  • Software and database applications including Customer Relationship Management systems and Student Management Systems.

Ability to:

  • Interpret community college regulations and maintain compliance with the rules;
  • Present information to individuals and large groups orally and in writing;
  • Maintain positive relationship with students partner agencies instructors department staff and employees in other units;
  • Promote and model appropriate workplace behavior with culturally diverse populations;
  • Promote an unbiased open forum for the safe exchange of ideas and learning opportunities;
  • Apply sound judgment common sense and tenacity to a variety of workplace problem solving; Work in a diverse dynamic and fastpaced workplace;

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree or equivalent education or higher in Social Work Counseling Education or related field;
  • Experience working with populations representing diverse backgrounds life experiences and abilities;
  • Demonstrated commitment to promote equitable access and educational achievement of diverse students.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working with diverse populations of students clients and community and business partnerships in an educational setting;
  • Masters degree or equivalent in Education Communications Human Services Social Sciences Student Development or related field;
  • Experience advising in a higher education setting;
  • Strong oral and written bilingual/multilingual communication skills in Spanish and English;
  • Computer skills including Microsoft Office and database management.
