Description

The University of Southern Maines Department of Linguistics seeks a fulltime faculty Lecturer (non tenuretrack) beginning Fall 2025 to teach courses and participate in the planning and evaluation of the curriculum of the ASL/English Interpreting Program. The successful candidate will also work directly with the Coordinator of the ASL Program.

The required teaching load will consist of 12 credit hours per semester covering a range of interpreting courses from introductory to advanced levels. These courses must succeed in bringing motivated and capable students toward advanced competency in ASL and Interpreting commensurate with national certification. Maintaining the quality of these offerings is essential to our nationally accredited interpreting program (CCIE).

The position includes a 1 course release per semester upon approval for a candidate who additionally meets the preferred qualifications below relevant to coordinating our nationally accredited ASL/English interpreter training program.

A candidate who also meets the requirements for an interpreter training program coordinator will also assume key administrative roles for the ASL /English Interpreting program which includes supervising the servicelearning component of the interpreting courses recommending and mentoring parttime instructors for interpreting courses advising students in the ASL/English interpreting track and documenting and submitting needed paperwork to maintain our CCIE accreditation.

The Department of Linguistics is an undergraduate program within the College of Science Technology and Health. Linguistics students can major in general linguistics or in a number of concentrations. We also offer several minors.

This position will be located on our Portland Campus and will pay annual salary of $50000. This is an on campus inperson teaching position. Candidates must reside within commutable distances from the USM campuses. This requirement is essential for the ability to participate in supporting and building upon our university culture of student focused every day and allows for regular participation in oncampus activities meetings and fulfills the responsibilities of the role effectively.
