This position assists the Bridge Design Engineer with reviewing plans and maintains the Bridge Design Manual. Duties include but are not limited to reviewing structure layouts for conformance to hydraulic or other applicable criteria; participating in site investigations providing guidance with respect to South Dakota Department of Transportation (SDDOT) practices; reviewing structural design check design and load rating calculations for conformance to American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) specifications SDDOT practices and structural engineering theory and practice; reviewing plans for highway and structure construction for conformance to design intent; providing review comments to designers and plans preparers for nonconforming issues; ensuring that review comments are incorporated into construction plans and; assisting with preparation and maintenance of a Bridge Design Manual.
The incumbent will typically work in an office environment with eighthour work days Monday Friday. Some instate travel is required for structure site inspections with occasional overnight stays as necessary for long distance and/or multiday work trips.

Applicants should possess or be eligible to obtain a Professional Engineering License. Successful candidate will be required to obtain Professional Engineering when he/she becomes eligible.
The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
Only applicants with a bachelors degree in civil engineering or a related field will be considered. Applicant possessing a Professional Engineering license and 36 years of related experience is preferred.

- physically traverse natural and constructed terrain in the field around structure sites to perform inspections;
- read interpret and evaluate engineering plans and specifications for acceptable engineering practices;
- organize analyze calculate and evaluate available information and draw reasonable conclusions;
- communicate information clearly and concisely;
- effectively plan organize and prioritize work activities to meet schedules and deadlines;
- work in a team environment;
- develop positive working relationships.
