Performs preventative and corrective maintenance services and makes advanced level repairs to District automobiles lightduty vehicles apparatus and related District equipment. Incumbents of this position perform at an advanced skill level in all areas of vehicle apparatus and equipment maintenance and repair. Position involves high levels of interaction with coworkers customers and vendors. Must be able to function in an environment of changing priorities delays and cancelations and still meet expected timelines and schedules. This job requires manual dexterity and attention to detail.

Essential Functions/Major Responsibilities:
The functions listed below are characteristic of the type and level of work associated with this position. They are not allinclusive. Individuals may perform some or all as well as other similar work.

• Onsite regular attendance is required for this position.
• Performs advanced level corrective diagnostics and repairs on District autos lightduty vehicles apparatus and equipment including but not limited to; electrical and lighting systems vehicle drive train hydraulic systems suspension tires and brake systems exhaust aftertreatment and other emissions fire suppression systems and vehicle accessories.
• Designs fabricates and installs a variety of items as necessary for special projects vehicle/apparatus setups and modifications. Proficiency for both Tig and Mig welding. Drafting design fabrication and final installation of items necessary to meet individual needs as well as parts and items that are not regularly obtainable by the District or vendors.
• Uses personal computer based programs and the internet to obtain information correspond with vendors and customers record work order entries maintain databases and log time card information.
• Observes all safety rules and maintains the required annual certifications as set forth by the Federal Government State of Oregon OSHA DEQNIOSHand the District.
• Transports vehicles and equipment throughout the Portland Metro area as needed to District maintenance facilities outside vendor establishments and customers locations.
• Pick up and deliver parts from local vendors as directed.
• Provides assistance to other Division workers as needed.
• May be required to work other than the regular assigned shift for an unspecified length of time.
• Perform maintenance and repair on shop tools and equipment.
• Assists with shop clean up and answer shop phones.
• Participates in Divisional project development outside of normal job classification and duties.
• Performs maintenance repair and annual certification on ground ladders and fire pumps.
• Reports or remains at work during major emergencies disasters and some large emergency exercises with little or no notice. Must be able to meet this requirement without substantial delay by taking appropriate steps for individual and family preparedness.
• Receives assignments well outside of job description or normal chain of command during major emergencies disasters and some emergency exercises.

• Assist with seasonal tire chain repairs and/or replacement. Remain available for major snow event District needs which may require attendance when other staff has been released from work.
• May be called afterhours by supervisor to perform service calls on apparatus that are not able to remain in service on scene. Must properly diagnose and repair in field when possible or assist in facilitating a tow and access to a reserve apparatus when needed.
• Perform apparatus communications set up and repairs to include the mobile radios as well as the Firecom systems for each. System integration and functional testing of new systems and hardware. Also function as technical support for these systems.
• Initial set up and maintenance of Cradle Point as well as trouble shooting and repair of associated hardware and software. Regular maintenance and beta testing of new products. Research and development for integration and future adaptations that become available. Perform Cradle Point install and set up in designated vehicles and apparatus. Perform or assist with necessary diagnosis for connectivity issues and AVL malfunction.
• Work with web based and PC diagnostic software and other complex programs to aid in the constantly evolving electronics that control the many different systems in the Districts apparatus. Remove and install different software programs as needed to mitigate electronic issues that arise with the multitude of multiplexing issues.
• Perform engineering level modifications and repairs. Work directly with the manufacturer to remedy issues directly related to how the vehicle was originally built. Provide input and recommendations and at times provide drawings or examples of necessary repair to a specific part or vehicle.
• Design and fabricate special tooling shop storage and work areas for specific jobs and daytoday tasks.
• Other Duties as assigned.

• Ability to meet performance/production standards as established by the District.
• Ability to work independently as well as establish and maintain harmonious relations with others both inside and outside the organization.
• Must demonstrate proficiency in the diagnosis repair and maintenance of; heavyduty diesel and automotivebased gasoline engines both manual and electronically controlled automatic and manual transmissions standard and heavy duty brake suspension and steering systems multiplex electrical systems electronic engine and drive train control systems hydraulic systems climate control and air conditioning systems roll stability and supplemental restraint systems and stationary and mobile generators.
• Must acquire and demonstrate proficiency in the diagnosis repair and maintenance in the following fire apparatus specific areas; fire apparatus foam systems fire pumps and control systems to include electronic valve controls aerial waterway systems and controls emergency lighting systems and proprietary multiplex diagnostic systems specific to Pierce Freightliner Cummins Detroit and Allison.
• Possess a thorough knowledge of methods standard practices equipment and tools of the automotive and heavy equipment trade.
• Ability to use tools and operate machines and equipment normally used in an automotive/heavy duty repair shop with a high degree of efficiency and accuracy in a fast paced and occasional high stress environment.
• Must be able to demonstrate a high level of customer service and courtesy the ability to work cohesively in a teamoriented environment with moderately high levels of contact both internal and external to the District.
• Ability to organize multiple tasks and schedules simultaneously with limited supervision. Tasks involve basic decisions using reasonable judgment and common sense commensurate with communicated expectations specific direction stated instructions and District guidelines.
• Ability to meet performance/production standards as established by the District.
• Ability to perform those physical activities required for essential functions including but not limited to; frequent sitting standing walking and otherwise being mobile occasional to frequent crouching kneeling stooping twisting bending climbing balancing reaching grasping and pinching; frequent lifting carrying pushing and pulling up to 75 lbs.
• Ability to read understand and communicate effectively in English both orally and in writing.

• Solid knowledge of and ability to operate a personal computer and standard office software applications in addition to any specialized software necessary for the performance of job duties.

Minimum:

• High School Diploma or GED
• Four 4 years experience as a general technician with increasing responsibility
• Must possess a current valid Oregon drivers license with an acceptable driving record
• Requires the ability to weld and fabricate using mild steel and aluminum materials
• Must possess personal tools and tool box for performing duties

• Associate Degree in automotive and/or diesel technology
• Seven 7 years experience as a general technician
• Possess or obtain EVT certifications during first year of employment
• Possess or obtain an Oregon Class B commercial drivers license with air brake restrictions removed and tank endorsement and maintain a driving record insurable by the Districts insurer during first year of employment
• Class A commercial drivers license
• ASE Certifications
• A basic welding certificate in mild steel or aluminum
• A thorough knowledge of fire apparatus preventative maintenance standards as outlined byNFPApublication
• CPR/AED/First Aid Certified

Additional Information

This is an inperson with a 5/8 schedule from Monday to Friday. The standard working hours are from 7 am to 3 pm. Hybrid work or work from home arrangements are not available for this position.
