The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking aHighway Maintenance Worker Lead to work as a member of the Southwest Region (SWR) Maintenance & Operations team out of Vancouver WA. In this role you will be responsible for maintaining the highways and their infrastructure to ensure the safe and efficient movement of goods services and people throughout the region. This position will lead the Regionwide Striping Team in the application of Striping along with any required maintenance of highways bridges and right of ways to improve the safety of the traveling public. This position is critical in fostering a respectful and healthy work environment with focus on diversity equity and inclusion. In this role you must be dedicated to safety while coordinating and performing daily work activities which include heavy equipment operations providing and roadway maintenance for subsections of highways.
What to Expect
Work is often physical in nature and performed primarily outdoors and often next to highvolume highspeed traffic that may require standing for extended periods of time. A typical schedule is Monday through Thursday 40hours per week for 4 10hour days. Weekends and holidays may be required to respond to nonscheduled or callout emergencies. Rotational night shift is required.
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this rolethe Highway Maintenance Worker 3 will:
- Lead Highway Maintenance Crews in the daily performance of all maintenance and operations tasks throughout State Highways.
- Prioritize plan and schedule maintenance activities lead schedule and direct highway maintenance activities.
- Lead and perform maintenance activities such as Regionwide work zone traffic control third party damage repair thermosplastic asphalt paving & patching.
- Lead and perform drainage maintenance including catch basins sedimentation facilities and ditches; erosion and slide repair; sign maintenance and repair; and guardrail fence and impact attenuator installation and repair.
- Perform asphalt and concrete pavement maintenance and repair; apply concrete asphalt and synthetic materials.
- Utilize personal computer and tablet to maintain accurate records and reports for personnel equipment inventory and materials.
- Train personnel in equipment usage safety highway maintenance and public relations.
- Operate Commercial Drivers License (CDL) and heavy equipment such as dump truck with plow and sander units front end loaders truck/trailer combos sweepers mowers and pickups.
- Work with maintenance crews during winter snow and ice operations.
- Steward safety programs by knowing and enforcing the established WSDOT/WAC safety policies and procedures; conduct safety meetings.
Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity the following are required:
- Two 2 years of experience as a Highway Maintenance Worker 2 Bridge Maintenance Specialist 2 Maintenance Specialist 2 or equivalent construction experience.
- A Class A CDL with endorsement N and without air brakes restriction as well as a valid medical card.
- A valid Traffic Control/Flagging Card with experience performing traffic control per MUTCD including planning setting signs and cones or barrels and flagging.
- Two 2 years of experience performing traffic control on high speed multilane highways.
- Experience adhering to safety policies and diligence in performing work in a safe manner.
- Experience leading and/or supervising crews providing clear direction and making good decisions under stressful conditions.
- Experience in working independently and prioritizing workload with the ability to handle multiple assignments.
- Skills to communicate effectively in both verbal and written form.
- Possess computer skills with the ability to operate software and system such as Microsoft Office Suite programs including Excel Word and Outlook.
- Ability to work nights weekends holidays and perform emergency callouts/standby.
- Ability to report in service to assigned duty station within 60 minutes of an afterhours call.
- Ability to transport move and manipulate various types of equipment weighing 50 pounds or more.
- Ability to work at elevated heights above 25 feet over land or water as well as traverse in rough steep and uneven terrain.
It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
- High school diploma possession of a GED certificate or equivalent.
- Understanding of Transportation Equipment Fund owned equipment.
- Experience planning coordinating and communicating clear instructions on jobsites.
- Traffic Control Supervisor certification.
- Experienced working around and with high speed/ high volume traffic.
- Knowledge of the surrounding area.
