About WSDOT

The Opportunity

WSDOT is currently seeking to fill a Transportation Planning Technician 2 vacancy within the Pavement Management Unit. Using a specialized pavement rating computer workstation the successful candidate will view digital images of the state highway system to identify interpret and record each of the surface defect or distress on the pavement surface. These pavement distress ratings are used in the Washington State Pavement Management System (WSPMS) to identify pavement condition and sections of pavement that are candidates for projects. When imagery is unclear the incumbent will use construction history information google imagery or other available sources to verify surface type and to identify any inconsistencies in construction history data. In addition the Pavement Raterwill serve as one of the trainers of new employees who rate pavement.


What to Expect

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this rolethe Pavement Rater will:

  • View digital images of the state highway system.
  • Rate pavement distresses using proprietary software.
  • Train new employees who rate pavement.
  • Perform quality control/quality assurance rating.
  • Sample previously rated pavement and rating it again and achieving a very similar if not exact same rating.
  • Work with other raters to coordinate rating distresses.
  • Work at a computer monitor for extended periods of time with a repetitive work task.


Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity the following are required:

  • Ability to perform computerbased visual pavement distress categorization which is used with other components to determine the condition of the states road network.
  • High attention to detail.
  • Skills in using computers for spreadsheets Email and word processing.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with coworkers WSDOT staff consultant local agencies and the public.


It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

  • One 1 season experience using Pathway Rating System and associated software.
  • Thorough understanding of pavement surface condition rating.
