Job Description

Pay Scale: Classified

Pay Grade: 3 $12.51/$15.11/$17.71

Primary Purpose:

Perform oil and filter changes chassis lubrication and tire changing and related tire repairs of Transportation Department and other select district vehicles while prioritizing safety efficiency and favorable appearance.

Qualification Guidelines:

Education/Certifications:

High School Diploma or GED

Successfully complete twenty 20 hour Texas DPS School Bus Driver Certification Course within first six months of employment

Attend and successfully complete triennial eight 8 hour refresher Texas DPS School Bus Driver Certification Course

Acceptable report from criminal history inquiry

Valid Texas Commercial Drivers License Class B with P and S endorsements or training will be provided

Acceptable driving record as obtained from the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Must pass preemployment drug test

Must pass preemployment annual State DOT physical examination

Must pass annual FMCSA DOT drug and alcohol test

Official citizenship documentation

Experience:

Background experience in care and management of property and the provision of equipment and services.

Minimum of three years experience in the repair of tires

Minimum of three years experience in oil changes and chassis lubrication

Special Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Ability to read understand and communicate in English.

Ability to complete required bus driver safety training.

Ability to follow written and verbal instructions

Be knowledgeable and current with all pertinent local state and federal regulations and guidelines regarding facilities and environmental compliance issues

Be trained in tasks related to the fueling of all facility vehicles

Clear understanding of the high priority placed on safety

Ability to work cooperatively with people

Supervisory Responsibilities:

None

Equipment Used:

Electronic time clock

Operates hand tools and stationary power tools related to the repair and maintenance of light to medium duty trucks and equipment

Mental/Physical/Environmental Demands:

Lifting: Heavy lifting pushing pulling walking climbing bus steps repeatedly within a duty cycle

Environment: Work outside and inside around vehicles and frequent exposure diesel and gas fumes toxic or caustic chemicals and outdoor weather conditions

Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

  1. Responsible for oil changes chassis lubrication and tire changing and repairs on all school buses Transportation Department service vehicles select other district vehicles.
  2. Be knowledgeable and remain current with all pertinent local state and federal regulations and guidelines which govern the school transportation operations.
  3. Be knowledgeable and current with all pertinent local state and federal regulations and guidelines regarding facilities and environmental compliance issues.
  4. Acquire technical updates from the Shop Foreman on vehicles and equipment as necessary to provide proper repair and maintenance.
  5. Must understand that safetysensitive work orders are to be prioritized and furthermore communicate conditions which compromise safe operation of the vehicle and restrict its usage until all repairs are completed and inspected for placement back in service.
  6. Communicate the status of outofservice vehicles and/or equipment to the Shop Foreman and/or transportation office well in advance of each route for which said vehicle would ordinarily be needed and for which a spare bus would be required.
  7. Maintain accurate work orders of all shop and maintenance related work and submit to Shop Foreman as work is completed.
  8. In cooperation with Shop Foreman monitor all vehicle and equipment odometers or hour meters to assure timely service intervals.
  9. Assist other shop personnel in diagnosis and/or repair when the other individual may benefit from the additional help.
  10. Report any unusual conditions to the Shop Foreman for discussion or advice.
  11. Assist in routine daily fleet fueling and underthehood checks.
  12. Operate and maintain all related shop equipment and facilities in a safe and efficient working order.
  13. Make safe and efficient use of all supplies resources and manhours.
  14. Communicate with Shop Foreman to maintain an ample supply of all regular inventory items to prevent unnecessary delay of equipment repair.
  15. Participate in road calls as needed.
  16. Demonstrate good attendance and punctuality.
  17. Aid in emergency response rescue in the event of natural or manmade disaster.
  18. May be required to drive a route as needed.
  19. Perform other related duties as assigned.
