JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: Veterinary Science Teacher

WAGE/HOUR STATUS: Exempt

FUNDING SOURCE: Local

REPORTS TO: Principal/Director of Career and Technical Education

PAY GRADE: Teacher Salary Schedule approved by the Board of Trustees.

LENGTH OF DUTY: 187 days plus additional duty days based on assigned duties

DEPARTMENT: Career and Technical Education

PRIMARY PURPOSE: To provide students in the Animal Science program of study the knowledge in the areas of science research and business of animals and other living organisms. It teaches CTE learners how to apply biology and life science to realworld life processes of animals and wildlife either in laboratories or in the field which could include a veterinary office a farm or ranch or any outdoor area harboring animal life. Students may also research and analyze the growth and destruction of species and research or diagnose diseases and injuries of animals.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Education/Certification:

  • Bachelors Degree preferred
  • Valid Texas teaching certificate for subject/level assigned to Agriculture preferred
  • Licensed Veterinary Technician
  • This position may require additional training or meeting attendance outside of the instructional day

Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Demonstrated competency in the core academic subject area assigned.
  • Knowledge of curriculum and instruction
  • Proficient in industry software or willing to attend training.
  • Understanding and experience using specialized equipment
  • Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior.
  • Strong organizational communication and interpersonal skills
  • Fluent with technology use and actively integrates technology to enhance student learning.
  • Strong understanding of career opportunities and skills required for employment in agriculture
  • Selfmotivated with excellent work ethic

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

Instructional Strategies:

  1. Develop and implement plans for the curriculum program assigned and show written evidence of preparation as required.
  2. Present the subject matter according to guidelines established by Texas Education Agency board policies and administrative regulations.
  3. Provide students with instruction on industry standard software and provide opportunities where appropriate for students to earn industry certifications.
  4. Access and use available data to plan and implement appropriate instructional/learning strategies activities materials and equipment that reflect accommodation for individual needs of students assigned (i.e. gifted and talented bilingual/ESL 504 etc..
  5. Work cooperatively with special education teachers/staff to modify curricula as needed for special education students according to guidelines established by Individual Education Plans (IEP).
  6. Cooperate with other members of the staff in planning and implementing instructional goals objectives and methods according to district requirements.
  7. Plan and supervise purposeful assignments for teacher aide(s) and/or volunteer(s) while working with students in the classroom.
  8. Use appropriate technologies to strengthen and enhance the teaching and learning process.
  9. Participate in program Advisory Board.
  10. Train students in pet handling grooming and customer service.
  11. Oversee daily operations of a student led pet care enterprise.

Student Growth and Development:

  1. Assist students in analyzing and improving methods and habits of study.
  2. Consistently monitor student achievement through formative and summative assessments.
  3. Assume responsibility for extracurricular activities as assigned and may sponsor outside activities approved by the campus principal.
  4. Present a positive role model for students that supports the mission of the school district.
  5. Serve as an advisor to the FFA Chapter and manage all activities related to the FFA Chapter attend and supervise FFA events camps conventions.
  6. Promote and work with the CTE at the campus to increase interest and enrollment in the Career and Technical Education program related to Agriculture.

Classroom Management and Organization:

  1. Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate to the intellectual physical social and emotional development of students.
  2. Provide safety training for students and maintain documentation that the student mastered the concepts.
  3. Manage student behavior in the classroom and other areas as appropriate in accordance with Student Code of Conduct board policies administrative regulations and/or IEP.
  4. Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students equipment materials and facilities.
  5. Assist in the selection of books equipment and other instructional materials.

Communication:

  1. Establish and maintain open positive lines of communication with students parents/guardians community members and industry partners.
  2. Participate as a member of the cluster advisory committee.
  3. Maintain a professional relationship with all supervisors colleagues students parents and community members.
  4. Use appropriate and acceptable communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.

Professional Growth and Development:

  1. Demonstrate current knowledge understanding and skill in the assigned content area instructional strategies and the teaching and learning process.
  2. Participate in district and campus professional development.
  3. Participate in required district meetings cluster meetings and advisory meetings.
  4. Demonstrate interest and initiative in professional improvement.

Policy Implementation:

  1. Keeps informed of and comply with state district and school regulations and policies for classroom teachers.
  2. Compile maintain and file all physical and electronic reports records and other required documents.
  3. Attend and participate in faculty/staff meetings and serve on committees as required.
  4. Demonstrate behavior that is professional responsible and in compliance with the Professional Code of Ethics.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors: Must demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written). Must maintain emotional control and exercise reasoning and problemsolving skills while under stress. Should be able to interpret procedures and analyze data for decisionmaking. Frequent indistrict and occasional instate or national travel.

Posture: Prolonged siting and standing; frequent kneeling/squatting bending/stooping pushing/pulling and twisting

Motion: Frequent walking; repetitive computer work with frequent use of hands and wrists

Lifting: Regular light lifting and carrying 15 50 pounds); may lift and move textbooks and classroom equipment

Environmental Factors: Exposure to hot or cold temperatures. Occasional prolonged and irregular hours. Work with animals.

Safety: Contribute to the prevention of accidents and injuries by observing safety rules and District policy practicing the principles and skills taught in safety training wearing personal protective equipment as required reporting injuries and incidences immediately to the supervisor and being proactive in the ongoing efforts to improve and maintain workplace safety.
