QUALIFICATIONS
Candidates must possess a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree from an accredited institution. Candidates must hold a valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of Virginia or be an LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse). Additionally candidates should have CPR and Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. Previous experience in pediatric or school nursing is preferred. Strong assessment critical thinking and communication skills are essential. Candidates should demonstrate proficiency in administering medications providing first aid and managing medical emergencies. Knowledge of state health regulations immunization requirements and electronic health record systems is desired. Candidates must exhibit compassion empathy and professionalism when interacting with students parents and staff.
DESCRIPTION
The Substitute School Nurse is responsible for promoting the health and wellbeing of students and staff within the school community. This role involves providing direct nursing care administering medications managing chronic health conditions and promoting health education and prevention initiatives.
GENERAL DUTIES (May not include all duties performed)
SUPERVISION
Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Supervisor of Pupil Personnel in conjunction with the School Principal.
WORK CONDITIONS
This position typically operates within the school clinic which may include an area for nursing assessments and treatments. The nurse may also travel between classrooms or other areas of the school to provide care or conduct health screenings. The work environment may involve exposure to infectious diseases bodily fluids and medical emergencies. The nurse may need to lift or move students who require assistance as well as carry medical supplies and equipment. Additionally the nurse may be required to attend meetings training sessions and school events as part of their responsibilities.
