Job Summary:
Operates and monitors auxiliary equipment and systems which support the safe efficient reliable and environmentally sound production of electricity and steam.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Properly operate inspect and monitor in a safe efficient reliable and environmentally sound manner steam power plant equipment including:
- Gas Turbine/ Generator and its associated auxiliary equipment
- Feedwater / Condensate Systems
- Fuel Systems
- Boiler Equipment
- Water Treatment System
- Observe variations in operating conditions and interprets meter and gauge readings to troubleshoot plant equipment to resolve operational problems.
- Recognizes safety hazards and follows safety guidelines for personal protection protection of fellow workers and the protection of the public.
- Take samples and perform routine laboratory test and analysis.
- Understand and execute the equipment clearance procedures.
- Communicate information clearly both orally and written.
- Assist maintenance personnel in performance of maintenance activities to include use of tools equipment and company vehicle.
- Troubleshoot plant equipment to resolve operational problems.
- Generate and review work requests for of equipment repair.
- Implement plant emergency procedures as needed.
- Operate various computer systems to receive analyze comprehend and input data.
- Monitor and record data available through the use of various instruments recording charts annunciator systems and other monitoring devices onto shift logs as directed by plant operational procedures.
- Observe variations in operating conditions and interpret meter and gauge readings.
Working Conditions:
Normal office environmental and/or power plant environment outofdoors work environment. Outofdoors environment at generating plant work locations includes:
- Work in and around rotating equipment high voltage electrical equipment high noise areas and elevations up to 150 feet.
- Work in all temperatures and climatic conditions. Some temperatures can be extreme.
- Work in confined spaces some requiring the use of respirator protective equipment.
- Performance of duties requires response to calls 24 hours/day seven days/week and working irregular shifts.
- Emergency situations will require the use of a respirator and climbing stairs to reach safety shelters.
- Establish facial hair in the sealing area of a respirator is not permitted.
- Contact lenses are not permitted except for specific medical reasons.
- Substantial footwear must be worn in accordance with the current Safety Shoe Policy.
Minimum Requirements:
- High school diploma or GED.
- 3 years experience as a Plant Operator in a power plant environment or equivalent experience and skill to include onthe job training.
- A TWIC card is required to work on the Shell Deer Park facility.
- Valid Drivers License
- Successful completion of NRGs Preemployment testing is required for this position.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
- Complete Gas Turbine Fundamentals Course.
- Ability to use addition subtraction multiplication and division to perform flow pressure and meter calculations.
- Read and interpret blueprints schematic diagrams procedures and technical manuals.
- Operate computer keyboards and printers.
- Communicate conditions of plant system and equipment to others.
- Discern and respond to verbal and auditory signals from control panel.
- Work without supervision inspection while carrying out duties.
- Take record and analyze readings of various electrical and mechanical meters.
- Knowledge of and ability to operate various switches and valves and the effect each has on the total operation.
- Ability to operate Company vehicles and equipment (e.g. forklift cherry picker etc. and maintain operating licenses and certifications. Valid State Drivers License is required.
Additional Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of steam power plant system operations and basic power plant principles used daily in decision making and work tasks.
- Knowledge of and ability to operate various switches and valves and the effect each has on the total operation of the generating station.
- Ability to handle multiple task or assignments at the same time.
- Ability to Tag Out/Lock Out equipment per NRG Tag Out/Lock Out procedure.
- Ability to use addition subtraction multiplication and division to perform flow pressure and meter calculation.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints schematic diagrams procedures and technical manuals.
- Ability to communicate plant system and equipment conditions on to others.
- Ability to perform checks (e.g. PMs) on running and idle equipment.
- Ability to discern and respond to verbal and auditory signals from control panel.
- Ability to discern assorted colors.
- Ability to record and analyze readings of various electrical and mechanical meters.
- Ability to work without supervision inspection while carrying out duties.
- Ability to operate Company vehicles and equipment (e.g. forklift plant vehicle etc. and maintain operating licenses and certifications. Valid State Drivers License is required.
- Ability to use a personal computer/tablet and associated software.
- Ability to perform routine laboratory tests and analysis on samples from power generation processes (i.e. boiler water makeup demineralizer etc..
- Ability to operate various computer systems to receive analyze comprehend and input data.
- Ability to generate work notifications for of equipment repair.
- Ability to communicate information clearly both orally and in writing.
- Ability to assist Head Operators and others in performance testing.
- Ability to work successfully in a team environment.
- Selfmotivated to train and learn additional skills to support the plant and job requirements.
Physical Requirements:
- Power Plant EnvironmentWork both inside and outside in all temperatures and climate conditions in accordance with Heat Stress procedures. Work around large rotating equipment energized electrical equipment in high noise areas and/or in confined places on elevations in excess of 250 feet or from platforms at heights of 5 feet or greater. Climb stairways ladders and work from aerial devices.
- Must be prepared to work irregular or rotating shifts and respond to emergency callout 7 days a week 24 hours a day.
- Ability to work in mentally stressful environments: must be able to react to crises where immediate action is required to correct or curtail potentially damaging or hazardous situations.
- Daily work expectation requires ability to perform tasks by walking standing sitting kneeling crouching squatting twisting pushing pulling shoveling climbing and working with hand tools (up to 25 pounds) in position above and below head and extended from body to complete repairs.
- Lift carry position and use tools and/or equipment (weighing up to 50 lbs. in awkward positions swing various weights of sledgehammers stoop and bend to reach valves pull on chainfalls or comealongs.
- Ability to twist the body and neck while driving company vehicles or operating company equipment.
- Performance of duties may cause frequent jarring of the body.
- Work with and around hazardous and nonhazardous materials (reference the waste management guidance manual).
- Must be able to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) as required i.e. steeltoed boots respirators goggles safety glasses etc.
- Have ability to discern and respond to verbal and auditory signals.
- Ability to discern assorted colors.
Compensation and Benefits:
- Compensation and Benefits are administered per the terms and conditions of the Deer Park Contract represented by IBEW 66.
