DEQ has an open opportunity for an Environmental Specialist I.


It is fulltime 40 hours per week) withState Benefits.

This position currently qualifies for a hybrid telework option with routine office and remote workdays. The Department of Environmental Quality trusts our employees to be selfmotivated and successful in hybrid/remote roles. Telework options are subject to change at the discretion of management.


TheEnvironmental Specialist Iwill conduct inspections of animal operation facilities provides overall guidance related to inspections to permittees conducts compliance oversight and enforcement for animal feeding operations and lagoon closures and conducts review of permits and other responsibilities as needed to effectively carry out the program objectives.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Performing onsite compliance inspections within the Animal Feeding Operation (AFO) unit and other program units as assigned.
  • Reviewing monitoring reports from permitted facilities to determine compliance with permit requirements and limits.
  • Conducting complaint investigations and stream determinations.
  • Responding to environmental emergency situations as a Division of Water Resources representative.
  • Providing technical assistance to the citizens consultants and contractors in a professional manner.
  • Valid Driver License.
Additional Information:
This position requires the ability to walk through rough steep and uneven terrain and work in unfavorable conditions including exposure to inclement weather noise dust fumes machinery and insects. Must possess the ability to train personnel and share knowledge of practices related to their job duties.

The Division of Water Resources:
The Division of Water Resources is responsible for protecting North Carolinas drinking surface and groundwater for all waterbodies including lakes streams rivers wetlands and aquifers. This environmental stewardship is accomplished through actions including permitting issuance investigations regulatory compliance and enforcement monitoring and field assessments certifications laboratory analysis and testing planning water quality standards management educational outreach and other efforts. The Division comprises six Sections: Water Quality Regional Operations; Water Sciences; Public Water Supply; Water Quality Permitting; Groundwater Resources and Water Planning. Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelors degree in one of the agricultural biological engineering environmental or natural resource sciences or a closely related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
