Job Description

Position Summary:

Reporting to the Manager of Clinical Trials with clinical oversight from the Laboratory Manager the Clinical Trials Medical Laboratory Technician will be responsible for the technical procedures data entry and infection control practices associated with the laboratory components of clinical studies performed at Frederick Health. The performance of general lab duties and knowledge of safety and infection control practices is required. Must observe all aspects of job performance including laboratory inservices and continuing education.

Job Summary

Performance of assigned routine procedures in an efficient manner to assure quality care with minimal turnaroundtime.

Essential Functions:

TECHNICAL CAPABILITIES:

  • Demonstrates proficient performance regarding all laboratory technical procedures.
  • Makes decisions based on experience and/or education.
  • Recognizes and resolves problems troubleshoots malfunctioning equipment and uses alternative methods where trained to do so.
  • Correlates data extensively using clinical information and knowledge of testing theory to determine reasonableness of results.
  • Follows protocol for running QC and accepting/verifying results and resolves any out of control discrepant or unexpected results with adequate documentation of any corrective action.
  • Produces accurate results no more than one technical error in a 12month period.
  • Follows all laboratory specimen handling policies and procedures.

DATA ENTRY:

  • Performs appropriate functions in LIS according to laboratory protocol with accuracy and precision.
  • Produces and reports results with accurate transcription according to protocol in a timely manner.
  • Maintains and completes patient information records as required.
  • Completes work or reports results according to protocol.

PRODUCTIVITY:

  • Consistently completes work within laboratory established TurnAroundTime.
  • Organizes and performs several tasks simultaneously during peak work periods.
  • Consults supervisor for additional assignments or special projects during light workload situations that will be completed in allotted time without interfering with regular duties.
  • Completes work or reports results according to protocol; does not leave work for follow up.
  • Participates in department performance improvement.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

ATTENDANCE:

  • Demonstrates punctuality and timeliness regarding work schedule.
  • Begins work at the start of assigned shift.
  • Maintains attendance record for less than step 1 of the absence control program.
  • Accurately uses time clock. Clocks in and out of every shift.

GENERAL LAB DUTIES:

  • Demonstrates good judgement in handling situations not covered by written or verbal instructions.
  • Adapts to change or unusual circumstances in a way that promotes cooperation and minimizes disruption in the work environment.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Notifies supervisor of any problems and documents any corrective action.
  • Retains knowledge gained from training and requires no additional training to perform routine tasks.
  • Maintains a clean organized area with adequate supplies.
  • Assists in basic procedures report production specimen procurement and accessioning.
  • Operates assigned equipment and performs all procedures in a safe manner as instructed.

KNOWLEDGE OF MANUALS:

  • Demonstrates knowledge of safety manual Infection Control Disaster manual and department specific manuals
  • Knows where MSDS are kept.
  • Knows Chemical Hygiene Plan and what to do in the event of an actual chemical spill.
  • Knows policies for Standard Precautions.
  • Practices good safety and security habits.
  • Knows what to do in the event of a disaster.
  • Knows Emergency Response Plan procedures in the event of an actual fire or major spill.
  • Follows all policies and procedures as outlined per department manual.
  • Promptly reads and reviews new policies and procedures and follows same.

EDUCATION:

  • Observes all aspects of job performance concerning objectives of laboratory inservice and continuing education.
  • Attends department and/or staff meetings as required or reads and initials minutes within established time frames.
  • Conveys knowledge competently to new employees in an encouraging and interesting way.
  • Participates in staff development and continuing education programs.
  • Recognizes employees need for additional training when a new test is introduced or when a new employee is introduced to the shift. Communications with section supervisor so additional training can take place.

INFECTION CONTROL:

  • Responsibly follows the hospital exposure control plans/bloodborne and airborne pathogens
  • Demonstrates knowledge of techniques procedures and correct use of protective barrier equipment
  • Changes gloves regularly and washes hands between and after glove changes
  • Disposes of sharps in red sharps container where appropriate
  • Throws used gloves in biohazard container only
  • Wears lab coat

Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

  • Oral and written communication skills manual dexterity analytical skills and keyboard skills
  • Working knowledge of general types of laboratory equipment (centrifuge microscope etc. keyboard LIS calculators fax auto analyzers

Minimum Education Training and Experience Required:

  • Successfully completed academic course of study in an accredited college or university and the clinical training at an accredited facility which will lead to an Associates Degree to become a Medical Laboratory Technician and eligible for certification.
  • Alternative: Associate Degree in a related science with appropriate clinical training and
    • certification eligibility; or 50 week military course with certification ability; or
    • successfully passed HEW or HHS exam.
  • MLT ASCP certification is preferred but not required.

Pay is based on experience skills and education. If position is parttime salary will be prorated based on scheduled hours. The pay range may also vary within the stated range based on specialty if applicable. NonExempt positions may have shift differential and/or Overtime paid if applicable.
