Lays pipe on grade in the construction of storm sewers by use of string line and carpenters level or optical level and rod.
Digs trenches; lays and joins pipe.
Mixes mortar and carries mortar and brick for construction of catch basins curbs and bridges.
Mixes pours and finishes concrete.
Operates dump truck to haul materials and pull equipment trailers.
Ensures job sites are coned off for safety of workers and the general public; checks for gases present prior to workers entering confined spaces; performs other checks to ensure job sites are safe.
Lays brick for construction and repair of storm sewer manholes.
Spreads asphalt with hand tools to pave parking lots and streets.
Grades ditches with hand tools for laying pipe.
Uses power saw and other tools to cut down trees and bushes for the maintenance and clearance of right of ways and easements.
Operates small tractors bush hog and equipment in the construction and maintenance of storm system and streets.
May operate or assist with TV surveillance equipment to locate internal blockage and places in need of repair in storm sewer system.
Erects barricades and places lanterns around trenches and other work being done on traffic ways.
May assist in the operation of the jet/vacuum truck.
Shovels and levels asphalt paving materials for repairing and patching streets.
Must not pose a direct threat or significant risk of substantial harm to the safety or health of himself/herself or others.
Must be committed to a high standard of safety and be willing and able to comply with all safety laws and all of the Citys safety policies and rules and must be willing to report safety violations and potential safety violations to appropriate supervisory or management personnel.
Must maintain regular and acceptable attendance at such level as is determined by the City of Dothan.
Must be regularly available and willing to work at least 8/10 hours per day 40 hours per week or such other hours per day or hours per week as the City determines are necessary or desirable to meet its operational needs.
Must be available and willing to work such overtime per day or per week as the City determines is necessary or desirable to meet its operational needs.
Must be available and willing to work such weekends and holidays as the City determines are necessary or desirable to meet its operational needs.
Must be available and willing to travel to such locations and with such frequency as the City determines is necessary or desirable to meet its operational needs.
Must perform duties onsite except those job duties which are customarily or by their nature performed offsite (such as offsite work meetings with City customers clients or citizens making deliveries to designated destinations traveling to field offices to meet with subordinates or conduct training etc.
Important Job Functions:
Performs routine maintenance on tools equipment and vehicles.
Fills out work order forms; keeps daily log books.
Operates line truck bush hog dump truck and stump cutter.
Constructs forms for construction of catch basins pipe junction boxes etc.
Ensures materials and tools needed for scheduled jobs are loaded on truck.
Performs after hours oncall duties.
Performs other related work as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of:
Standards tools materials methods and practices of maintaining streets and drainage and related equipment.
Occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work.
Inspection techniques and methods.
Skill in:
Use and operation of tools and equipment used in area of assigned responsibility.
Mental and Physical Ability to:
Perform duties requiring heavy lifting and carrying; and work in unsanitary and hazardous environments.
Understand and follow oral and written instructions including rough sketches or blueprints.
Deal tactfully with the public.
Make basic written reports.
Understand basic written directions and read street signs.
Operate a motor vehicle and trucks.
Be regular and dependable in attendance.

While performing the essential functions of this job the incumbent is regularly required to stand; sit; use hands to finger handle or feel objects; see clearly; bend body downward and forward requiring full use of the lower extremities and back muscles; reach with hands and arms; hear; read and write; walk; squat; crawl; ascend and descend stairs or ladders; work at various heights; work underground in confined spaces; frequently lift or carry heavy objects between 50100 pounds; grasp and hold objects; and drive vehicle/trucks or other equipment.
Working Conditions:
Work is performed in an outdoor environment with continuous exposure to various outside atmospheric conditions; possible bodily injury from moving mechanical parts of equipment tools or machinery electrical shock explosions dust and dirt fumes chemicals raw sewage and/or storm water.
The incumbents working conditions range from slightly loud to very loud.
Graduation from a standard seniorhigh school or GED equivalent as recognized by the United States Department of Education (USDE) or Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA);
Six 6 months recent experience in the installation repair and inspection of underground utility work (to include water sanitary or storm sewer systems); and/or concrete; and/or asphalt work is preferred.
A completed employment or inhouse application to include but not limited to detailed description of duties month and year and complete address on each job listed.
Condition of Employment/Promotion/Demotion/Transfer
Must complete and accept Certification of Understanding & CDL Condition of Employment/Promotion/Demotion/Transfer at time of hire. (See Condition for details.
Necessary Special Requirements:
A valid operators license and an acceptable driving record. (PBA09/10/01
Employees are required to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver License (CDL) within 120 days of date of employment/promotion/demotion/transfer into this position or 21st birthday. (See Condition for details.
In an emergency and/or standby situation an employee in this position must be able to report to his/her regular workstation in a maximum of 30 minutes from the time of notification. (PBA 01/09/95
An employee in this position must possess a telephone no later than the end of the probationary period due to call out.
An applicant for this position is subject to various background investigations up to and including a criminal credit past employment and reference checks.
Employees are required to submit to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with the City of Dothan policy which includes preemployment and random tests for the duration of employment in this position. (PBA 08/13/12.
Must meet the City of Dothans employment physical standards which include drug/alcohol testing.
Qualified applicants will be evaluated on training and experience as documented on their application. This evaluation will comprise 50 of their final grade. The other 50 will be based on the Physical Ability/Agility course/test.
