Job Description

Overview:


The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine (DPLM) at Nationwide Childrens Hospital (NCH) affiliated with the DPLM of The Ohio State University College of Medicine seeks an academic anatomic pathologist at the level of assistant associate or full professor to join one of the largest pediatric pathology and laboratory medicine departments in the U.S.

The successful candidate will join an experienced professional staff of approximately 30 pathologists and doctoral scientists. Qualifications include board certification in anatomic pathology; certification or eligibility in pediatric pathology will be an asset.

Building upon an already premier program the candidate has the opportunity to grow the academic mission of the department by providing excellent clinical care education and/or research. The successful applicant should be accomplished or willing to develop expertise in medical renal pathology and other areas of surgical pathology. Interest in AP Pathology Informatics will also be an asset. Our digital pathology program went live fully in 2024 with the opportunity for digital review and signout of all surgical pathology and autopsy cases and the potential for intradepartmental consultation. We are in the process of exploring Artificial Intelligence algorithms for supplementing assessment of digital slides.

The DPLM accessions over 8000 surgical specimens over 1200 cytology specimens and performs over 90 autopsies per year. Anatomic Pathologists are supported by a team of three 3 Pathologists Assistants and one 1 gross technician. The histology laboratory is equipped with state of the art instruments and performs a comprehensive array of tests (special and immunohistochemical stains electron microscopy analysis).

The DPLM is in the midst of a multimillion dollar construction project that included renovation of the gross room and histology lab in the last 2 years. Further updates to the autopsy suite in the future are included in this strategic goal. EPIC Beaker implementation is in the early phase with the goal of going live in 2026/2027.

The Institute for Genomic Medicine (IGM) clinical laboratory processes 7000 specimens a year. There is close collaboration between AP and IGM; AP faculty participate in assessment of the material submitted for clinical molecular testing from patients enrolled in COG (Childrens Oncology Group) protocols nationwide as well as material submitted for the national molecular characterization initiative (MCI) for solid tumors. There is also an ongoing molecular study of vascular lesions at NCH.

The position will provide assistance to the Departments anatomic pathology laboratory active learning curriculum for residents graduate students pathology fellows and consultative services and Outreach Program. An active ACGME accredited fellowship program in pediatric pathology is an integral component of the NCH DPLM. Faculty development and academic advancement is central to our mission so we have instituted a robust mentorship program with mentors at NCH and other respected institutions.

Examines and analyzes tissue specimens to diagnose and treat diseases. Analyzes and interprets laboratory tests including biopsies blood tests and other specimens to identify diseases and conditions.

Essential Functions:

  • Provides surgical pathology clinical pathology or autopsy diagnostic services including frozen section diagnosis gross examination microscopic examination report generation and case coding. Performs autopsies completes death certificates coordinates work with funeral homes records preliminary findings and generates a comprehensive autopsy report.
  • Provides input to budget development new procedure development cost containment supplier and equipment selection and utilization monitoring. Assists in the supervision of technical staff and provides input to the annual performance appraisals of key staff.
  • Directly supervises and instructs residents and fellows during daily work. Contributes to medical and allied health student teaching during rotations. Contributes to lectures and laboratories for medical students and allied health students as requested.
  • Troubleshoots modernizes or otherwise improves services from the department particularly within assigned clinical area. Completes small projects and investigations some of which may result in publications or national conference presentations.
  • Collaborates to ensure regulatory state and federal compliance in the section as well as compliance with other mandatory and voluntary applicable standards. Ensures that services and practices fulfill clinical care requirements.
  • Performs and analyzes quality improvement projects. Contributes to appropriate local and national professional organizations through activities such as serving on committees and giving presentations at annual meetings. Represents on hospital and medical staff committees.
  • Offers expertise to daily activities including sample analysis procedure writing problem resolution complex workups information services outpatient phlebotomy referral testing marketing and customer service. Serves as the primary contact for members of the clinical staff.
  • Collects photographs prepares and presents autopsy surgical and laboratory cases chosen for presentation at interdepartmental case review conferences and grand rounds. Provides inservice didactic presentations develops distributes and publishes educational articles participates in research projects and contributes to peer reviewed journals.


Education Requirement:

Graduate of an accredited medical or osteopathic school or international equivalent M.D. followed by a residency in pathology.


Licensure Requirement:

  • Medical License in the State of Ohio required.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain an unrestricted license to practice medicine in the State of Ohio.


Certifications:

  • Board certified or Board eligible in Anatomic and/or Clinical Pathology required.
  • Board certification/eligibility in Pediatric Pathology (if appropriate) and recertification as needed.


Skills:

  • Working knowledge of anatomic physiologic biochemical and genetic basis of disease processes required.
  • Analytical and interpersonal skills necessary to develop and implement goals and policies; to provide effective departmental leadership; and to interact successfully with external contacts including medical nursing and administrative staff.
  • Publication in professional journals is highly desirable. Writing experience is essential.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain an appointment to the Nationwide Childrens Hospital Medical Staff in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine.
