Job Description

This position is Open Until Filled after the mandatory 10 day posting window

PRIMARY PURPOSE:

Provide identified special education students with learning activities and experiences designed to help them fulfill their potential for intellectual emotional physical and social growth through the delivery of quality music therapy as a related service or enrichment.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Education/Certification:

Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university

Board Certification from the Certification Board for Music Therapists

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Ability to instruction students and manage their behavior

Knowledge of special needs of students

Knowledge of Admission Review and Dismissal (ARD) Committee process and Individual Education Plan (IEP) goal setting process and implementation

Knowledge of how to adapt curriculum and instruction for special needs

Lesson planning and presentation skills

Conflict resolution skills

Strong organizational communication and interpersonal skills

Knowledge of Music Therapist state and federal mandates

Ability to determine eligibility and need for music therapist services

Ability to analyze data and provide recommendations

Ability to maintain accurate records and meet deadlines

Work Conditions

Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment including personal computer and peripherals.

Posture: Sitting and standing positions bending/stooping and reaching fully above head pushing pulling and twisting

Motion: Frequent sitting standing walking climbing balancing pulling and pushing; reaching repetitive hand motions

Lifting: May require regular heavy lifting 45 pounds or more) and positioning of students with physical disabilities control behavior through physical restraint assist nonambulatory students and lift and move adaptive and other classroom equipment

Environment: Exposure to noise; exposure to biological hazards; districtwide travel

Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress; ability to respond to needs in a timely manner in a high stress environment

Regular Attendance is an essential function

Minimum Experience:

University/college required student teaching or approved internship

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  1. Assess recommend and provide appropriate music therapist services for eligible students in instructional settings as outlined by the American Music Therapy Association (AMTA) Council on Standards and Practices and the Certified Board for Music Therapist (CBMT).
  2. Select and adapt music therapy strategies for maturity level interests strengths and needs of the students.
  3. Recommend order inventory and maintain appropriate music therapist equipment.
  4. Follow and maintain established referral process and records for music therapist services.
  5. If provided as a related service provide written documentation that accurately reflects a students response and progress each reporting period.
  6. Attend Special Education Department and District meetings and training sessions as assigned.
  7. Plan and provide direct and consultative music therapy services as both a related service and educational enrichment.
  8. Identify students strengths weakness learning styles appropriate and inappropriate behaviors and adapt music therapy strategies to encourage students participation in the least restrictive environment.
  9. Serve as a consultant to classroom teachers parents and other relevant people on methods of music therapy interventions and strategies to aid learning or reinforce appropriate behaviors.
  10. Participate on ARD/IEP committees and recommend appropriate music therapy goals and objectives to meet student needs.
  11. Create classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical social and emotional development of students.
  12. Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students equipment materials and facilities.
  13. Establish and maintain open lines of communication with students and their parents.
  14. Maintain a positive and professional relationship with all colleagues students parents and community members through effective communication both verbally and written.
  15. Use acceptable communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.
  16. Demonstrate behavior that is professional ethical and responsible.
  17. Keep informed of and comply with state district and school regulations.
  18. Compile maintain and file all reports records and other documents required.
  19. Maintain confidentiality.
  20. Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
  21. Perform such other tasks and accepts such other responsibilities as may be assigned.
  22. Comply with state district and school regulations and policies for classroom teachers including the Texas Educator Code of Ethics.

EVALUATION: In accordance with state law and Board policy.
