MECHANIC

STANDARD POSITION DESCRIPTION

Classification: Mechanic Location: Transportation

Reports to: Director of Transportation FLSA Status: NonExempt

Bargaining Unit: PSE

This is a standard position description to be used for positions with similar duties responsibilities classification and compensation. Employees assigned to the position description may or may not perform all the essential functions indicated in this position description.

This job description does not constitute an employment agreement between the employer and employee and is subject to change by the employer as the needs of the employer and requirements of the job change.

Part I: Position Summary:

Serves as a Mechanic who specializes in school buses heavy duty diesel fleet vehicles lawn and maintenance equipment. Responsible for determining needed repairs and/or replacements components on a vehicle; ensuring the availability of vehicles in safe operating condition; performing scheduled maintenance on vehicles; and providing written documentation of repairs to meet district state and federal requirements.

The district represents a diverse community with a population ofmore than 50 of students with diverse backgrounds. We seek an individual who has successful experience in working with culturally diverse families and communities. The selected candidate must demonstrate a commitment to strengthening community engagement and communication with the districts diverse populations.

Part II: Supervision and Controls over the Work:

Work is performed under the general supervision of the Directors of Transportation and with direction from the Lead Mechanic. Work is reviewed for timeliness completeness safety guidelines and established priorities. Trade work is performed independently and in conformance with local city county state and federal codes and standards of the profession.

Part III: Major Duties and Responsibilities (depending on specific assignment duties and responsibilities listed may include but not limited to the following):

  • Determines problem (e.g. mechanical electrical etc. for the purpose of identifying the source of the problem and implementing appropriate repairs
  • Inspects vehicles at scheduled intervals trip preparation etc. for the purpose of verifying vehicle is in safe operating condition
  • Interprets technical data in repair manuals for the purpose of repairing vehicles within factory specifications
  • Maintains tools equipment and/or shop area for the purpose of ensuring the availability and functioning of required tools and equipment within a safe work area
  • Prepares documentation (e.g. maintenance records work/parts orders inspection/service sheets etc. for the purpose of providing written support and/or complying with regulating guidelines
  • Repairs vehicle systems/components/body work etc. for the purpose of ensuring the availability of vehicles in safe operating condition in compliance with OSPI and WSP specifications and criteria
  • Responds to inoperable vehicle for the purpose of repairing or moving vehicle to ensure the safety of others (e.g. students district personnel public)
  • Services vehicles for the purpose of completing the preventative maintenance program requirements
  • Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities
  • Performs minor body work (e.g. front ends fenders etc. for the purpose of maintaining the appearance and safe operation of the vehicles
  • May be required to drive a school bus with students on board in accordance with CBA.
  • Required to follow Board policies and stay abreast of updates and changes.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by administrator and/or designee.
  • Promote a positive and collaborative work environment.

Part IV: Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Incumbent must have successful experience in working with culturally diverse families and communities or have otherwise demonstrated a commitment to strengthening engagement of a diverse community and skill in communicating with a diverse population.

  1. Graduation from high school or equivalent.

  1. Must have successfully completed a two year auto/ heavy diesel course or have 3yrs of experience as a Heavy Diesel / Automotive technician.

  1. Must possess or acquire within 90 days ASE certification for Heavy Duty Preventive Maintenance Inspection.

  1. Must be able to respond to after hours and weekend breakdowns and accidents and be able to report to the shop in a reasonable amount of time during assigned oncall status.

  1. Must be trained in First Aid. CPR and defibrillator training may be required.

  1. Ability to recognize and take measures to eliminate safety risk on equipment used to transport students and employees.

  1. Initiative and ability to work with minimal direction; sound judgment and decisionmaking capabilities are essential.

  1. Knowledge of federal state and local safety regulations related to assigned trade/craft.

  1. Must possess a valid Washington State drivers license and a safe driving record and be able and willing to operate district owned vehicles.

  1. Must possess a valid Class B Commercial Drivers License with School Bus and Passenger endorsement or ability to obtain one through District supplied training within 6 months employment.

  1. This position will be subject to random drug testing.

Part V: Desired Qualifications:

  1. Four years of experience as Cummins Certified technician applicable to CM2350 and CM2450 engines Cummins Insight and Cummins Quick Serve

  1. Five years of School Bus Repair and Maintenance experience with ASE School Bus Master Tech Certification

  1. Familiarization with WSP School Bus Inspection and out of service criteria

  1. Body panel repair and refinishing experience

  1. Bilingual skills

Part VI: Physical and Environmental Requirements of the Position:

The physical demands and work environment described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently required to bend crawl sit move about hear and speak. May be required to work in restricted spaces in a prone position and/or under difficult lighting and access conditions. Noise level may be high when operating power equipment. Employee may be exposed to outside weather conditions especially in emergency repair situations.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and more than 50 pounds using appropriate support equipment.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision distance vision color vision peripheral vision depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. Employee is required to properly use such safety equipment as is appropriate to the work to prevent injury to self or others.
