JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
Job Summary:Buildings and Maintenance Services a department within the Office of Physical Plant at Penn State University is seeking a talented and motivated individual to join our team as a Skilled Trades Supervisor. This fully onsite position is responsible for overseeing a crew of approximately 20 skilled trades technicians including Electricians HVAC technicians Plumbers and Maintenance Technicians during the first shift. The role involves managing work ensuring excellent service to customers and balancing multiple budgets.
Primary Duties:
Lead motivate and maximize the productive efficiency of the crew.
Assign work verify time spent on tasks review time cards and adjust crew size by hiring and using temporary resources.
Utilize the Physical Plants Facility Asset Management System.
Collaborate with the Office of Physical Plants Planning and Scheduling department.
Provide appropriate training and assist technical service employees with acquiring required tools and equipment.
Ensure quality and customer satisfaction by reviewing planned work conducting site visits and discussing work with customers.
Provide leadership by monitoring the work environment and making appropriate adjustments.
Identify and capture opportunities to improve or expand services.
Advocate for safety by completing safety inspections conducting accident investigations and resolving gaps in the crew safety plan.
Accomplish administrative tasks including responding to messages and requests documenting activities and addressing discipline issues.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Hire train evaluate develop and supervise skilled trades personnel.
Prioritize schedule and assign work crews and equipment; arrange for equipment repair and maintenance.
Establish work sequence including trades coordination and utility shutdowns; monitor deadlines.
Conduct site visits; ensure regulation and job specification compliance; discuss resolve refer and report issues.
Coordinate with customers outside vendors contractors and subcontracted workforce; provide informal estimates for services.
Provide technical expertise and consultation; collaborate with engineers designers architects planners and estimators.
Coordinate and participate in government agency inspections.
Administer budgets and monitor inventory; identify cost containment measures; research recommend and order equipment/materials.
Communicate enforce and make recommendations for work rules policies and procedures.
Ensure a safe work environment; participate in emergency planning and response; investigate accidents and prepare reports.
Follow Collective Bargaining Agreement; participate in grievance procedures hearings and arbitrations.
Qualifications:
Requires an associates degree or higher plus four years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge of the tools skills and techniques required for facility maintenance.
Previous experience managing a unionized workforce is preferred but not required.
The scheduled hours for this position are Monday to Thursday 6:00 A.M. to 4:30 are times when hours may need to be extended or adjusted to meet the needs of the business.
Background Checks:
This position requires that you operate a motor vehicle as a part of your job duties. A valid drivers license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check will be required in addition to standard background checks.
