Duties and Responsibilities
** Assists in the Aquariums Education and Volunteer Departments and interfaces between the activities and programs of both.
** Assists with providing instruction presentation exhibit interpretation and expertise to Education program participants visitors and volunteers.
** Together with Volunteer Coordinator and Education staff participates in planning and conducting training supervision and evaluation of student staff and volunteers involved in Education and Volunteer programs.
** Assists in training volunteers in specifics relating to duties associated with various Aquarium programs.
** Maintains volunteer schedules and updates monthly volunteer calendars.
** Assists in providing exhibit interpretation for visitors of all ages and expertise levels as needed.
** Assists in providing workshops and other inservice programs on and offsite for professional educators.
** Performs general office duties such as filing answering phones processing reservations and handling correspondence.
** Creates Education and Volunteer graphics and educational materials.
** Assists with reservations correspondence and coordination with the front desk while also welcoming and facilitating group visits to the Aquarium.
** Assists with preparation distribution and monitoring of publicity for Education and Volunteer programs as needed.
** Assists in the supervision of volunteers in Education and other Aquarium programs including field trips.
** Together with the Aquariums Live Exhibits Department identifies and collects live specimens for education programs as needed.
** Maintains inventory of Educations live specimens holding tanks its collections of reference materials and specimens and props used in Education programs.
** Maintains a highquality volunteer effort that is responsive and supportive to the Waikiki Aquariums operational needs.
** Assists with recruiting screening and interviewing potential volunteers from a broad spectrum of the Hawaii community. Responsible for obtaining criminal history records of all current and potential volunteers.
** Responsible for maintaining a secure and current database of details of current and potential volunteers volunteer incidents and required documents.
** Contributes towards the development and implementation of new volunteer initiatives and projects.
** Serves as a point of contact for volunteers. Fosters a positive relationship with them by responding to inquiries and providing information about program opportunities in a timely manner.
** Participates in the evaluation appropriate placement reassignment advancement and retirement of volunteers.
**Assists in the development and coordination of Aquarium volunteer appreciation and enrichment events.

Minimum Qualifications
Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Marine Biology Education Environmental Science Business Administration or related fields and 1 year of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for education or interpretation in an aquarium museum natural science center formal classroom or similar setting; volunteer management and coordination or equivalent education/ training or experience.
Supplemental Minimum Qualifications
.Demonstrated interpersonal skills and ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations the public colleagues and volunteers.
.Able to multitask lead subordinates manage work priorities and projects meet deadlines and manage employee relations.
.Demonstrated ability to understand oral and written documentation write reports and procedures and communicate effectively in a variety of situations.
.Demonstrated computer skills including database management graphics and Google Suite.
.Able and willing to work outside normal business hours including nights weekends and/or holidays as needed.
.Ability to travel independently to and from meetings events and the WAQ in a timely manner fulfilled by possession of a valid Driver License (Class 3 or use of other transportation which meets position needs.
.Ability to lead and participate in class and fieldtrip activities including walking hiking wading swimming snorkeling.
.Ability to lift and carry up to 40 pounds for the purpose of transporting program and project materials to offsite meetings or locations.
.First Aid CPR and Lifeguard certified or able to obtain and maintain certification within 12 months of employment.
.Any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required knowledge skills and abilities as indicated.
Desirable Qualifications
.Experience with diverse audiences in education or interpretation settings; preschool through university level families children students teachers and professionals.
.Experience in editing text materials.
.Knowledge of Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
.Functional knowledge of principles practices and techniques in education and volunteer management demonstrated by knowledge understanding and ability to apply concepts terminology.
.Functional knowledge of principles theories federal and state laws rules regulations and systems associated with interpretive services and volunteer management.
.Functional knowledge of Hawaiian marine natural history biology and ecology of aquatic organisms.
.Demonstrated ability to assimilate complex scientific concepts and materials and accurately interpret this information to a broad range of audiences in an entertaining and engaging fashion.
.Demonstrated ability to recognize problems identify possible causes and resolve the full range of problems that may commonly occur in the fields of education and volunteer services.
.Experience managing training and evaluating personnel in the workplace.
