What you will be doing:
In this position you will perform structural engineering analysis and calculations to determine the safe load carrying capacity of bridges evaluate overloaded (permit) vehicles and to identify weight restriction requirements (load posting values). You will also complete bridge safety inspections including routine nonredundant steel tension member (NSTM) low water and indepth inspections. Some bridge management and bridge design and retrofit tasks may be involved as well.

Alaska DOT&PF offers great opportunities for professional development having a wide variety of challenges involving all aspects of bridge analysis and design. The incumbent will learn stateoftheart tools technologies and methods to tackle these challenges. Comprehensive staff development is an important aspect of this job. Formal and inhouse training are provided with a focus on advancing an Engineer 1 to the Technical Engineer 1 position. If you are interested in acquiring your Remote Pilot/Part 107 certification DOT&PF has allocated funds to pay for this program.

The position is located in the Alaska DOT&PF Headquarters building in Juneau. Travel opportunities throughout the State are available as part of this position. Hybrid teleworking is available upon completion of the mandatory probationary period and current department policies.

Any combination of education and/or experience that provides the applicant with the core competencies of:
Engineer/Architect 1
Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) or Architect.
Note: Positions in this class require professional registration as either an Engineer or an Architect. The employer will designate which professional field is required for each position.
Special Note:
Persons not registered in the State of Alaska must be registered in a state recognized by the State Board of Registration for Architects Engineers and Land Surveyors eligible for comity in accordance with AS 08.48.191(b). Persons employed under this provision must become registered in Alaska within one year of hire and sign an agreement to this effect as a condition of employment.
Technical Engineer 1 / Architect 1
Registration as a professional engineer (PE) or professional architect and two years of professional engineering or architectural experience as an Engineer 1 Architectural Assistant 3 or higher with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.
