The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) Bridge Section is looking for an Engineer/Architect 1 / Technical Engineer 1/Architect 1 Flex (Bridge Engineer) in Juneau to help us Keep Alaska Moving!

Base Salary Information:
Engineer/Architect 1:$3527.25 biweekly (OT Ineligible)
Technical Engineer 1/Architect 1:$4037.25biweekly (OT Ineligible)

What you will be doing:

In this position you will perform structural engineering analysis and calculations to determine the safe load carrying capacity of bridges evaluate overloaded (permit) vehicles and to identify weight restriction requirements (load posting values). You will also complete bridge safety inspections including routine nonredundant steel tension member (NSTM) low water and indepth inspections. Some bridge management and bridge design and retrofit tasks may be involved as well.

The incumbent will learn stateoftheart tools technologies and methods to tackle these challenges. Comprehensive staff development is an important aspect of this job. Formal and inhouse training are provided with a focus on advancing an Engineer 1 to the Technical Engineer 1 position. If you are interested in acquiring your Remote Pilot/Part 107 certification DOT&PF has allocated funds to pay for this program.

Worklife balance is supported by a 37.5hour work week and generous leave allowances. We offer flexible work schedules and flex leave accumulation for hours worked over 37.5 per week. Additionally salary increases are based on time served.

The working environment you can expect:

The position is located in the Alaska DOT&PF Headquarters building in Juneau. Travel opportunities throughout the State are available as part of this position. Hybrid teleworking is available upon completion of the mandatory probationary period and current department policies.


Who we are looking for:

Any combination of education and/or experience that provides the applicant with the core competencies of:

  • Structural Engineering: Knowledge of the concepts principles theories and methods related to the design and analysis of complex structures using a variety of materials. Structures may include aerospace systems or structures and other determinate or indeterminate systems.
  • Analytical Thinking/Problem Solving: uses a logical systematic sequential approach to address problems or opportunities or manage a situation by drawing on ones knowledge and experience base and calling on other references and resources as necessary.
  • Written Communication: Writes in a clear concise organized and convincing manner for the intended audience.

Special Note:
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE)
  • This position includes travel within the State (normally two to four trips per year of up to two weeks per trip). Travel may include small plane boat or ATV. Bridge inspection from underbridge inspection truck or lift may be required.

Engineer/Architect 1
Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) or Architect.

Note: Positions in this class require professional registration as either an Engineer or an Architect. The employer will designate which professional field is required for each position.

Special Note:
Persons not registered in the State of Alaska must be registered in a state recognized by the State Board of Registration for Architects Engineers and Land Surveyors eligible for comity in accordance with AS 08.48.191(b). Persons employed under this provision must become registered in Alaska within one year of hire and sign an agreement to this effect as a condition of employment.

Technical Engineer 1 / Architect 1

Registration as a professional engineer (PE) or professional architect and two years of professional engineering or architectural experience as an Engineer 1 Architectural Assistant 3 or higher with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.

  • Copy of your Professional Engineering (P.E. License Number (only if licensed outside the State of Alaska).
