The Division of Ethnic Studies in The School for Cultural & Social Transformation at the University of Utah invites applications for the position of faculty (assistant professor tenureline) in the Division of Ethnic Studies. We are enthusiastic to invite promising scholars and educators to join Ethnic Studies as a tenureline faculty who will advance the field through scholarship teaching service and community engagement with particular attention to Latina/o/x/e. We invite scholars at the forefront of their field of inquiry that embraces the interdisciplinary nature of our fields and committed to theorizing researching teaching and building community partnerships with research that benefits diverse Latinx communities. We invite applicants whose expertise in Latina/o/x/e and Chicana/o/x and studies includes but is not limited to: AfroLatinidad; Indigeneity and Latinidad; the environment health and community wellness; race and religion; gender and sexuality; social movement theory and labor; literature culture performance and the arts; immigration and border theory; criminology carceral systems and structural violence; race and Latinidad. We invite applications from across the disciplines. Faculty applying for this position will be housed in Ethnic Studies home to a dynamic group of scholars pedagogues and community collaborators. The Division of Ethnic Studies is the only degree and tenuregranting Ethnic Studies division in the intermountain west offering courses and scholarly expertise across ethnic and racial sites of inquiry (American Indian Studies Asian American Studies Black Studies Chicana/o and Latina/o Studies and Pacific Island Studies). Ethnic studies faculty are award winning scholars with strengths in decolonial theories diaspora and migration studies feminist studies critical mixedrace studies and indigenous studies and the Division has taken concerted efforts to expand into a global consideration of race and ethnicity. The cuttingedge research across the disciplines is exemplified in how ethnic studies faculty hold joint or shared appointments across campus and with faculty in the fine arts humanities social sciences and education. As an R1 institution Ethnic Studies tenureline faculty teach a 2:2 load. The Division of Ethnic Studies is housed in the School for Cultural & Social Transformation (Transform) an interdisciplinary college committed to cuttingedge research about shifting sexualities changing genders dynamic migrations identities abilities and emergent struggles against racist thought and action. In addition to the Divisions of Ethnic and Gender Studies the school is home to programs in Disability Studies and the Mellon Foundation Grantfunded Pacific Islands Studies Initiative. Since the schools emergence innovative research activities have occurred through internal and external grant funded activities such as the Transformative Intersectional Collective the creation of the Center for Pasifika Indigenous Knowledges the queering STEM postdoctoral training program the establishment of a Black Feminist Eco Lab the creation of the University of Utah GenderBased Violence Consortium among other projects. Currently Transform is home to Frontiers A Journal of Women Studies one of the oldest feminist journals in the country. Faculty in ethnic studies at the University of Utah seek a dynamic scholar whose research teaching and service will contribute to its core goals of innovating scholarship and putting theory into practice. The University of Utah is the flagship institution of the Utah System of Higher Education and has been classified by the Carnegie Foundation among research universities with the highest research activity. SLC has extensive arts and cultural activities. The area has received international recognition for its light rail system foodie culture Sundance Film Festival professional sports driven downtown renewal increasing population diversity and the state will host the 2034 winter Olympics. In 2023 U.S News and World report ranked Salt Lake City as the best place to live in the nation. Qualifications: Minimum Qualifications PhD or Ph.D by July 1st 2025 in Ethnic Studies and/or related fields Application materials (cover letter and/or CV) demonstrate record of commitment to engaging with and supporting various backgrounds and intellectual perspectives in both teaching and research Evidence of successful teaching experience and a record of scholarship in fields of Latina/o or Chicana/o studies Ethnic Studies and/or related fields Preferred Qualifications Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with faculty staff and students Proficiency in field related language Applications should include: A letter of intent describing the applicants interest in and preparation for the position Curriculum Vita Names of three professional references.
