ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW
The Accelerator Science & Technology (AS&T) Department develops transformative technology advances that will form the basis of nextgeneration particle sources and accelerators; supports userdriven research into the science and technology of accelerator and laser physics; and helps enable the deployment of new technologies for basic science industry medicine and security applications. The AS&T Department is comprised of the Accelerator Facilities Division (AFD) and Superconducting Magnet Division (SMD). It is part of Brookhavens Discovery Technologies Directorate which aims to deliver crosscutting technologies that support a range of scientific and national needs.
The Superconducting Magnet Division (SMD) designs builds and tests superconducting magnets for use in particle accelerators worldwide. The SMD also builds magnets for various other applications (e.g. Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage) and provides magnetic measurement services labwide.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Superconducting Magnet Division has an opening for a CryoMechanical Technician. Working under the general guidance of a senior cryogenic technician as well as on a team with experienced engineering staff you will:
Become fully proficient in the operation control and maintenance of aspects of the cryogenic facility and after being fully trained will work independently as a cryogenic test operator
Handle operations of helium refrigeration systems and test cryostats
Perform fabrication installation and general maintenance of cryogenic equipment pumps piping valves and cryostat
Exercise independence in the performance of a wide variety of technical tasks and assignments
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Under general direction perform a wide variety of highly skilled and complex technical assignments such as:
Maintain helium liquefiers water cooling towers and D&I water system
Perform daily system checks and log data
Perform maintenance and repairs on the cryogenic test facility
Preparation of superconducting magnets for installation and testing in cryostats
Work closely with scientific staff engineers and other technical staff in the Superconducting Magnet Division
Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
Requires a high school diploma or equivalent plus:
A BS degree in a technical field or;
A technical institute Adult BOCES certification AA degree in a technical field CCI program completion at BNL plus 4 years experience or;
A technical high school certification program (eg. BOCES) and 5 years relevant work experience or;
6 years relevant work experience
Experience maintaining components in industrial plant systems including pumps compressors and heat exchangers. Experience with tubing and piping systems sizing standards and component types and working with threaded joints flanged joints and associated sealing compression fittings clamped joints and system instrumentation such as pressure gauges temperature gauges vacuum gauges level probes and flow meters
Good mechanical skills the ability to work with basic hand tools and familiarity with mechanical drawings and process and instrumentation drawings
Ability to use a computer to make changes/adjustments to facility operations (LabVIEW knowledge useful)
Good communications skills and the ability to work as part of a team
Understanding of and ability to follow safety principles
Preferred Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
Requires high school diploma or equivalent plus:
A BS degree in a technical field and 2 years work experience or;
A technical institute Adult BOCES certification AA degree in a technical field CCI program completion at BNL plus 6 years experience or;
A technical high school certification program (eg. BOCES) and 7 years relevant work experience or;
8 years relevant work experience
Experience with vacuum and leak detection
Knowledgeable use of machine shop tools such as drill presses band saws lathes and milling machines
Understanding and capabilities to maintaining water tower cooling systems.
Familiarity with one or more of the following:
Industrial valves relief valves and burst disks systems valveactuators and preloading of valve stem setup and calibration of valve positioners
Rotating machinery and large motors such as alignment of motors to pump/compressor
Cryogenic systems and/or large pressurized gas handling systems
General vacuum techniques and equipment associated with insulating vacuum systems for cryogenic applications
Maintenance of industrial air compressors and drying systems
Prepping piping for welding working in a welding environment handling and use of compressed gas bottles and familiarity with associated regulators and pipe fitting types
Training education and/or experience with precision mechanical operating systems including rebuilding pumps and compressors
Environmental Health & Safety Requirements:
Ability to work a weekend shift as needed
Ability to lift 30 pounds climb ladders and work on elevated platforms
Ability to safely use machine tools such as drill presses band saws lathes and milling machines
Ability to work in a noisy environment with proper PPE
Other Information:
A valid US Drivers license is required

Brookhaven National Laboratory is committed to providing fair equitable and competitive compensation. This is a multilevel role and the full salary range for this position is $72050 $90000 / year. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidates qualification education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
