Job Description

Job Overview

The Content Specialist Head Startis responsible for providing direct early childhood instructional support to the Head Start teachers. The Head Start Content Specialist will support the Head Start and STEP Supervisor in ensuring curriculum implementation and support of the Head Start programs initiatives and federal requirements. The Head Start Content Specialist will work sidebyside with classroom teachers and teaching teams to support individual and programmatic needs. This position will also be responsible for designing and delivering quality professional development on the utilization of effective instructional strategies and bringing evidencebased practices into classrooms.

Roles and Responsibilities

The following information is intended to describe the overall nature and scope of the work being performed. This is not a comprehensive listing of all responsibilities or tasks; work may differ and other work may be assigned when deemed appropriate.

  • Administers and analyzes data as determined by the Classroom Assessment Scoring System (CLASS) observation assessments per Head Start and Virginia Department of Education requirements.
  • Teaches models facilitates and builds teacher capacity to utilize early childhood researchbased best practices to support student learning.
  • Assists teachers with the collection and analysis of data results; analyze program data and authentic student work that identifies content strengths and weaknesses that can be used to identify areas of need for professional development.
  • Collaborates with the Head Start and STEP Supervisor to create the programs professional development plan structure related to coaching and identify specific measurable and attainable benchmarks for teacher and student performance.
  • Meets regularly with the Head Start and STEP Supervisor to report on instructional practices and progress design opportunities to build family partnerships and identify schoolspecific program needs.
  • Collaborates with the Head Start and STEP Supervisor to discuss program goals and provide oversight for the Head Start School Readiness Goals.
  • Maintains and implements Head Start Education Service Area Plans to meet the Head Start Program Performance Standards.
  • Organizes processes and procedures for transition to Kindergarten.

Qualifications

Below are the minimum qualifications for this job. Equivalent combinations of education and experience are also acceptable.

Education

Bachelors Degree required

Experience

At least three years successful teaching experience in an early childhood setting

Licenses and Certifications

Holds or is eligible for a Virginia Collegiate Professional License; Postgraduate Professional License preferred

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of what constitutes effective teaching and learning
  • Demonstrated interpersonal and leadership skills necessary for building strong rapport and relationships with teachers and administrators
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Uses a team approach and collaboration to accomplish tasks and promote collaboration to improve instruction and student learning

While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly talking expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. The employee must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately loudly or quickly. The employee must possess normal cognitive abilities including the ability to learn recall and apply certain practices and policies. Frequently sitting and/or remaining in a stationary position for long periods of time. Exerting up to 25 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift carry push pull or otherwise move objects.
