Head Start Mentor teacher will be placed on the teacher scale commensurate with years of experience in a public school setting PK3 and professional training certifications honored by Augusta County Schools. 200 days/7.5 hours.
Program Summary:
Shenandoah Valley Head Start is a regional preschool program serving the communities of Augusta Bath Highland Harrisonburg Staunton and Waynesboro. SVHS is afederal grant funded program with a long standing history of success. Our mission is to providea quality preschool program that forms partnerships among families sites and communities.The program emphasizes the physical social emotional and cognitive development that is ageappropriate for children while encouraging lifelong learning and empowering families throughparent engagement.
General Description of Work:
The Head Start Mentor teacher has the responsibility for assisting with the development of training plans and instructional support for the instructional staff of the program. The Mentor teacher plans organizes and implements training for instructional staff and related personnel as it applies in teaching in the Head Start classroom. The Head Start Mentor teacher will mentor model and assist with assessing the effectiveness of the training provided to instructional staff and support staff working with Head Start funded children. The Head Start Mentor teacher will assist the Instructional Coach in the performance of duties as assigned.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assists the Education Coordinator and Instructional Coach in implementing the Head Start instructional program training plan.
- Provides input on instructional matters in the classroom related to staff performance in meeting program standards.
- Assists the Education Coordinator in determining what instructional supplies and materials are needed to meet the educational goals of the program.
- Provides input on the instructional training plans direction and Leadership for its implementation.
- Assists Early Childhood Development/Disabilities Coordinator Health Specialist and Mental Health/Behavioral Specialist in implementing training requirements set forth in the Head Start standards for classroom staff and support personnel other than curriculum related instruction.
- Assists service coordinators with the planning and implementation of special training activities for staff children and parents.
- Assist the Education Coordinator and Instructional Coach with other program duties related to instruction as assigned.
- Assist ECDDC in developing and implementing strategies and techniques for including children with disabilities in the Head Start classroom.
- Will informally mentor identified teachers on outcomes Creative Curriculum literacy etc.
- Support new staff as part of onboarding.
- Substitute in the classroom as needed.
- To assist with other program responsibilities as necessary.
- Other duties may be assigned.
Knowledge and Abilities:
- Knowledge of developmentally appropriate instruction for children ages three and four. Knowledge of developmentally Conscious Discipline practices for use with three and four year old children.
- Knowledge of current educational practices and developmental theory for preschool age children.
- Knowledge of proven practice in working in an educational setting with high needs children and their families.
- Ability to write correspondence plans and other forms of communication.
- Ability to relate appropriately to and coordinate ideas with the people being served.
- Ability to solve problems.
- Ability to work under pressure.
- Ability to communicate effectively in a variety of methods including computer technology.
- Ability to gather and analyze data and make concise accurate reports with recommendations.
Experience and Education:
- The Head Start Mentor teacher is an experienced teacher with a minimum of three years of documented successful teaching in a PK3 public school environment.
- The Mentor teacher is experienced in providing mentoring modeling training and leadership to other professional teachers in a variety of situations.
- The Mentor teacher has experience in working with children of high need ESL populations and special needs students.
- The Mentor teacher must have a current PK3 teaching license.
- The Mentor teacher shall have a minimum of a Bachelors degree in early childhood instruction or related field required.
Evaluation:
Performance on this job will be evaluated in accordance with school board policy and administrative regulations on evaluation of administrative personnel.
