The Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is home to Washingtons largest oncall fire department. It is responsible for protecting over 13 million acres in both state and privately owned lands. Working with interagency partners DNR embraces an allhands alllands vision. DNRs Fire Program serves the communities of Washington and is a strong advocate of wildland fire prevention suppression and mitigation.

Washington State Department of Natural Resources Olympic Region is searching for aFire Unit Manager for the Forks Unit of Olympic Region. The incumbent we are looking for is a proven team player has experience in fire operations and displays effective leadership and the ability to build and maintain team cohesion. This position supports the mission and goals of the Department of Natural Resources through fire suppression prevention and regulation programs.

The Fire Unit Manager position requires the ability to foster positive working relationships amongst the other region Fire Unit Managers and region employees while also interacting with the public fire service agencies contractors and other state county and federal agencies on a routine basis. It will require you to exercise your knowledge of wildfire suppression tactics and equipment forest protection regulations wildland fire training requirements and communication skills

Duties

Responsibilities:

  • Supervising and leading 1 Wildland Fire Management Specialist 1 Wildland Fire Management Supervisor 1 Equipment Operator 2 3 Engine Leads & 9 Firefighters.
  • Recruiting and building a strong cohesive team that can work together in extreme fire environments.
  • Determine safe and effective strategy and tactics during all phases of wildfire management based on available resources and expected conditions all while providing for the safety of personnel and the public.
  • Serving as the Agency Representative for the Olympic Region.
  • Building and maintaining cooperating agency partnerships.
  • Implementing fire prevention and fire education activities within the community.
  • Interacting with the public and promoting the DNR Mission.
  • Building a positive rapport with private landowners.
  • Ensuring staff resources equipment and facilities are available for incidents.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Strike Team Leader
    OR any 2 Single Resource Boss qualifications
    OR 2 years of any Single Resource Boss qualifications AND Incident Commander Type 4.
  • 2 years of supervisory experience.
  • Wildland fire management experience.
  • Experiences in leases and/or contract negotiations.
  • Knowledge of agency policies practices and procedures.
  • Strong verbal and written communication.
  • Basic computer software skills including Microsoft Office Suite and GIS.
  • Ability to be a successful leader and contributing team player within a defined work group.
  • Commitment to fostering and supporting an environment that honors diversity equity inclusion and environmental justice practices.
  • Perform assigned duties in a manner consistent with applicable laws regulations and public records retention and requests are followed.

Special Requirements and Conditions of Employment:
  • Must pass the Work Capacity Test at the arduous level annually.
  • Must obtain and maintain First Aid certification.
  • This positions assigned duty station is the work center. Work is frequently performed alone in isolated unimproved areas. Incumbent must be able to traverse uneven terrain in all weather conditions. The position will require operating a fourwheel drive vehicle on highway and forest roads.
  • This Position frequently requires time in the field traveling throughout the region. Occasionally this position will require travel to meetings outside of the region
  • A valid unrestricted drivers license and two years of driving experience. This position requires driving as an essential function. Finalists and/or interview candidates will be asked to provide a driving record from all states in which they have held a license during the past three years.
Desired Qualifications:
  • An associates degree in Fire Science Natural Resource Management or a closely related field.
  • Commitment to continual learning and adaptation to technology advances.
  • Skills in evaluating others abilities and assessing training needs.
  • Facilitative skills to work with groups of people to solve issues.
  • Division Group Supervisor and Incident Commander Type 3 (or higher).
  • Prescribed Fire Burn Boss Type 2.
  • 6 years of experience in wildland fire suppression and regulation including at least 4 years of supervisory experience.
